Secret Hollow

The flowers
were big then,
blooming purple
(subtlety of mauve
being yet unnamed)
in the secret hollow,
cozy for bumblebees —
The earth was soft
beneath dew-spangled grass,
rich with snail’s eggs
and something else
I haven’t found
yet, dropped
in the ferns —
a secret told
only to the flowers.
