Shielded

Days in days out.
Drifting down, through the clouds
Far from breaking day or diamond doubt

Somewhere the young are sitting, listening
And I can think of little else
but my own fortunate despair
Can think of little point to loving fully
when no one seems to care,

So another verse with no story, no ending
barely beginning
to fill a hole in a dimension
that never felt like mine —

But still, when no one else could understand
how my sorrow’s overstated,
my sense of life divine,
I’m still taking carefully long to die

Carefully in and out of this world
I sleep in shields of grace
And when the veil has fallen down
And I can finally see your face
— but now I’m still forbidden
I’m not ready for the fruit
I’m still covered in stitches from when
I tore myself apart.

If I could land anywhere
If you could really see me try
If I should offer solace
you must let me cry.

And I must die a thousand deaths
to remember wisdom grown
From the darkness before life began
where it leads me, I don’t know.

I could spin around in shadows
I could fall to knees in light
I could tell you how I’ve had those
times where wrong is right

I could fall into a sea of wonder
I could strike you with a blow
I could tear my flesh asunder
I could heal and I could grow

And what thinly veiled trick of mystery
that’s forever undefined
How better to make history
than in leaving truth behind?
