“Dressing Up” Your Marketing Message Is More Than Hype

They served it right out of the oven. You could see the heat floating upwards as it rested on the table.

I don’t recall how this tradition started. After a day at the pool, my boys and I eat one of those big, hot soft pretzels. They douse it with big salt crystals before serving it. I like to add spicy mustard to it as well.

This time I planned on a break from tradition. I started a gluten free diet a few weeks ago. That means no soft pretzels.

Still, my willpower faded. I had to try a small piece. I didn’t bother getting the spicy mustard since I’m the only one who likes it.

As we prepared to dig into our pretzel, I noticed it was light on the salt. I took a piece that had none — totally bare.

Yuck!

It tasted like paper.

I realized something that should have been obvious. The pretzel itself is nothing special. Only when dressed up with sea salt and spicy mustard does it taste good.

Lots of foods fall under this category. On their own they taste bland. Add a sauce, seasoning or dressing. This small addition transforms bland into delicious.

The Art Of Dressing Up

Food isn’t the only thing we dress up.

Buying any kind of product can yield the same experience. You buy something new or unique. You later discover that it works because of the dressing up the seller does to it.

Without salt and mustard, your hot pretzel is just baked dough. With salt and mustard, it’s a special treat.

When it comes to most info products, the base information is similar, if not the same.

A quick search on low carb diets yielded thousands of search results. At the core, most are the same.

Dressing up your product not only adds to the sales appeal, it often improves performance in the real world.

The “dress up” factor turns a basic fitness plan, diet plan or investing plan into a unique system. It makes the difference between a system they follow and one they abandon.

Avoid This One Pitfall

Here’s the risk you face with this strategy.

You dress up your product in the sales process but fail to deliver the extra value that makes it a transformative experience.

Beware of over promising and under delivering.

Your fancy product — without the special sauce — is just another product. My hot, soft pretzel without the salt and mustard is nothing special. It’s cooked dough.

If you dress up your sales pitch, dress up your delivery even more.
