This piece of art could be called “Data Sapiens”.

This art piece ponders on the relationship between data and humans:

Humans <> Data <> Objects — A relationship

We’ve witnessed digital art that takes human action data and projects it into the digital world. One example is an installation in Berlin where the audience’s movements are captured by a sensor and a light on the wall moves according to their motions.

We’ve also seen data influencing the behaviour of a physical artefact. Aaron Koblin’s ecloud is a good example: “The eCLOUD is a dynamic sculpture inspired by the volume and behavior of an idealized cloud. Made from unique polycarbonate tiles that can fade between transparent and opaque states, its patterns are transformed periodically by real time weather from around the world.”

The opportunity space lies in using a pure data set to influence human behaviour, as illustrated by the red arrow in the technical sketch above. Here is a practical application:

The author must be careful: The purpose of this art piece is neither to be pseudo-predictive nor sarcastic. The choice of the data set and the human behaviour medium to manifest it should not be influenced by either. It is best to think of this art piece as a way to “honour the data” with our bodies, a bit like indigenous tribes use their bodies to “channel” otherworldly energies and a “higher spiritual will”.
