This one is called “Set number 1"

Talking about his cardboard pieces Robert Rauschenberg mentions how the usage value (what is usually done with cardboard once they’re not used for packaging anymore) is far higher than market value (very often equal to zero as most shop owners will happily give you a couple of boxes for free).

“Set number 1" flips the idea and explores how an absent object can have more usage value than market value. The object is holes.

“Set number 1" is a table engineered to create pre-existing space for all the cutlery and tools whose location we already know on the table:

  • Two spoon and fork shaped holes
  • One knife shaped hole
  • One smaller cutlery shaped hole (for the dessert spoon)
  • A hole to place one’s cup with a fausset for mineral water right above it.
  • A hole for one’s plate
  • A towel fixed to the table for one to tie it behind one’s neck and avoid dirtying oneself.

The look and feel of the table are to inspire a future where things are somehow set in stone but also retain an aspect of tradition as if the composition was rooted in past rituals.
