Your Lying Eyes
Apple TV’s “For All Mankind” is a show worth watching, but what has particularly caught my eye is the deepfakes of newscasters, presidents, and entertainers. This is especially true in the second season as the technology to match lip movement to newly recorded speech has dramatically improved. This link goes into more depth:
How They Made It: The Deeply Real Deepfakes of 'For All Mankind'
If 2020 was the year deepfakes went mainstream, 2021, so far, has been the year that they became inescapable. Within…
TV is fun, real life starts to get worrisome
Watching that second season really opened my eyes as to how convincing deepfakes can be. But as much as this technology can contribute to a fictional movie, it will also be used for nefarious purposes. Don’t be surprised when you see and hear clips of political candidates who appear to say things that will weaken their campaigns.
On the other hand, a candidate might claim that a damaging video clip is a product of deepfake technology.
Wikipedia reports that this could even be used to “prove” that someone did or didn’t have lung cancer: A staged example of that fooled three radiologists.

Fraud and blackmail can also be augmented by deepfake technology. Such reworking of video could appear to be evidence of a crime, and of course, the existence of the deepfake technology also provides a defense.
Methods to combat this kind of tampering do exist. Microsoft has created a deepfake detection tool, but they admit “.. as detection capabilities get better, so too will the generation capability — it’s never going to be the case that Microsoft can release one tool that can detect all kinds of video manipulation.”

Almost all video today experiences computer processing to improve image quality; this adds to the difficulty of determining “truth”. Chips can do the processing as the video is recorded, so a pristine source may not exist.

Our manipulated future
It should not surprise us to see this sort of deception employed in politics and even our courts. Even if the manipulation can be exposed, there will be those who claim that the exposure itself is fake, a coverup, and will still believe the lie. We have certainly seen extreme examples of that in current politics; fake video will only add to the confusion.
Those who have seen the Marx Brothers films may remember this short clip. Today’s technology certainly brings new meaning to “Who Ya Gonna Believe, Me or Your Own Eyes”.
Computers and the internet have changed our lives in many wonderful ways, but technology also brings danger with it. Deepfakes will make you far more uncertain of anything you don’t experience in person.
