It’s Wednesday and the Raven’s arrived, delivering its fortnightly round-up of some of the best, brightest and boldest reads from the worlds of #marketing#media #tech and #StartUp — the stuff’ that’s sparkled in the roost, and sparked my interest.

THIS RAVEN: Another killer robot warning, SpaceX takes flight, Amazon drops on a Tweet, The Mail takes on Murdoch, Toblerones get ‘Lynched’, Satire takes the blame, Big Ben prompts selective national mourning, Ford gets local, America goes eclipse-crazy, Medium mixes it up, the Beeb loses its Sunday Neil, and a hedgehog wins the Championships …

Cue: Orange header conveying oncoming adventure according to my psych-colour assessment … Suggested intro song this week: The McCartneyan and summery vibes of Feel about You by Lindsey Buckingham &Christine McVie.

Advertising and Marketing

Road re-branding: Well done Sir Mo. But, one of GB’s greatest brands will struggle to disappear — effect on Quorn to be seen.

All loose change? An iconic part of London underground past goes under the hammer — not a great advert for the rapidly finishing Crossrail (Elizabeth line)

Tard is? Unsurprisingly, this campaign to draw out some lesser known facets of London caught the eye of Doctor Who fans. They might have guessed.

The colour purple: Way to Pantone.

De-Clerked: An interesting piece on the Kevin Smith distribution model. It may have cooled a bit, it’s still potent.

Eclipsed: Big news this week, was the eclipse of the sun. A stellar round-up of brand cash-ins.

Advert of the Moment

In the car: Ford’s assault on Britishness — the first of their new regional approach!

In the shops: Kudos to Walmart for taking on the Justice League with some style.

Media

Running totals: Who knew podcasts were on the rise, in very particular segments.

Winter continues: Poor old HBO, apparently not helping themselves.

Bit chilly at ITV too… The advertising revenue is biting.

A little less Neil: Contracts up for renewal.

A little lost satire: Rory pinpoints our populist rise.

Twin Peaks: An interesting and timely name for the centre of this interesting chance to take on food deflation.

Fox in the box: O. MAIL. G.

Hockney’s Finest: Kitaj gets even.

Big Ben problems: It’s been a sad week for MPs, lovers of big clocks, and me in my house at midnight listening out for those famous chimes.

And it’s put the state broadcaster on edge.

Elsewhere in London: Concept okay, the funding bloody awful. £940m is the amount being bandied around as the former Mayor of London’s wasted project fund…

Makes a point: The incoming Glaswegian seal has a some big, er hog-boots to fill too.

One year out? Popmaster makes it at last.

Sweet Caroline: The pirates go straight, 50 years after the BBC went anti-revolutionary.

When fests go wrong: Well music festivals goes through their cyclical slump — next comes ticket sales.

Salacious sell-outs? Couldn’t agree more Roy…

Pree-Mark. Pree-Mark? One of the great questions of our age.

On this network: Medium livens things up with a CLAP. Feel free to add them right here, right now.

Oh, and then it got really serious. Again, feel free to hit those claps up right now..

And then it managed to get even more serious. Yes, Medium’s just rebranded and here’s an amusing view on the utterly new logo (two years after the last one).

Story of the day: In case you haven’t noticed, KLF came back overnight. In an ice cream van. Here’s their new opus…

Tech & Start-up

The comeback kid gets smart. Nokia ups it game. You have to wish them well.

The dream is over! But perhaps a little too soon.

Adding to the script: Snapchat content is about to get serious.

Amazon up. Trump flexed his Twitter muscles on one of America’s largest companies.

Amazon down. While funnily enough, on the other side of the Atlantic, one of America’s largest companies came under scrutiny again.

Love lost film: Some might say they deserved it for axing LoveFilm — a companion of mine for over a decade.

Onto the future. And sometimes it comes back (like Back to the Future Part II)

Killer Robots from the future: After the academic tutting last week, more Musk warnings.

To the stars: Better portents for Musk as SpaceX — recently revealed as the world’s most expensive privately owned company — has a new take-off…

Start up engines: While ‘Rocket!’ was a key word in Google’s acquisitions.

Skynet activating: One the war field, some experts argue that time is of the essence

Not cut and dry: A stark lesson on diversity in tech.

Emoji-quality. Which may just make up for the recent reviews of the Emoji movie… Or maybe not. The Good work of Game of Thrones is making its way online.
