Meet WSJ’s Spring 2023 Interns
Our winter/spring interns have started! This talented group of eight journalists will be working across various of our beats and platforms, including breaking business news, careers & workplace, WSJ Pro, health and science, video, podcast and on/off platforms (social media, WSJ.com and WSJ mobile apps), all in New York, as well as politics in D.C.
This year will be the second time that we will have part-time spring interns, providing an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in our newsroom while continuing to attend school. The part-time spring internship program was created to help WSJ meet its commitment to recruit and build a pipeline of high-potential, diverse candidates who bring their varied backgrounds, experiences and perspectives into the newsroom.
In addition to seven part-time interns, the winter/spring class includes one full-time intern.
Ariana Perez-Castells (Health and Science, New York)
Ariana Perez-Castells reports and writes in English and Spanish, and is interested in data and investigative stories. Ariana was a 2022 summer reporting fellow at The Texas Tribune, covering breaking news. Her writing has appeared in Univision, City Limits, The Texas Tribune, and The Bushwick Daily. She holds a master’s degree in bilingual journalism from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York and a bachelor’s degree in written arts and human rights from Bard College.
Kailyn Rhone (Careers & Workplace, New York)
Kailyn Rhone is a graduate student at New York University studying business and economic reporting. Kailyn graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in publications from Florida A&M University. During her undergrad, she interned at Tampa Bay Times, the Texas Tribune and ProPublica. Her reporting has also appeared in Teen Vogue and the Tallahassee Democrat. In her spare time, she loves reading books and making YouTube videos.
Anna Mutoh (WSJ Pro, New York)
Anna Mutoh is a fellow at the Toni Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Anna has worked as a freelance journalist for Japan’s NewsPicks, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. She also had a 20-year career in the financial industry of which 15 were spent at Goldman Sachs in the Equities Division in both New York and Tokyo, where she managed institutional clients in sales and trading. She has a bachelor’s degree in history from Duke University. She played Gaelic Football for the Japan Women’s Team, and is currently taking a break from her triathlon career, as she is also a new mom.
Dia Gill (Real-Time, New York)
Dia Gill is a senior at Columbia University, where she studies sociology and previously served as the managing editor for the university’s oldest, independent student-run newspaper, the Columbia Daily Spectator. She has also previously worked as a reporting intern for the Chicago Tribune, The Daily Beast, and the Queens’ Gazette. Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, she is excited to dive into the world of New York finance through a journalistic lens at the Journal.
Zoe Kuhlkin (Podcast, New York)
Zoe Kuhlkin is a senior at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, where she concentrates in history, politics, and audio journalism. Throughout her time in college, Zoe has completed several production internships with companies like BronxNet Community Television, Intuit-Mailchimp, and Sony Music Entertainment. Born and raised in Fort Mill, South Carolina, she loves to read, go on long walks outside, and see whatever is playing at the movie theater.
Slav Velkov (Video, New York)
Slav Velkov is a senior double-majoring in film & TV and visual arts at Fordham College at Lincoln Center, where he is the vice president of the filmmaking club. Most recently, Slav interned as an assistant director for Lionsgate’s upcoming film, “The Bagman.” His films have participated in internationally-renowned festivals like The Big Apple Film Festival in New York and Flickers’ RIFF, and his short documentary “Change Bulgaria” had over one million total views on Facebook. Slav is from Bulgaria, and he is passionate about oil painting, ethics, and calisthenics.
Bharbi Hazarika (Digital Platform, New York)
Bharbi Hazarika is a graduate student at New York University studying about the intersection of news, tech and business in journalism. Previously, Bharbi worked for CNN International as a part-time producer. She has also interned at the Los Angeles Times, and The Hindu and The Wire in India. She was also part of The New York Times Student Journalism Institute’s 2021 cohort. Born and raised in Assam, India, she loves to read, cook and obsess over New York City’s history.
Eric Bazail-Eimil (Politics, Washington, D.C.)
Eric Bazail-Eimil is a senior at Georgetown University majoring in Latin American and African Studies and minoring in French and Theology. Previously, Eric interned at NBC News, working with the Meet the Press production and editorial teams, and staffing the network’s D.C. 2022 election night operation. He was also an intern and freelancer at Reason and served on the editorial board of Georgetown’s paper of record, The Hoya. A proud Florida Cuban, Eric can often be found cooking, practicing the piano, drinking copious amounts of coffee, and attending Orangetheory classes.
