Meet WSJ’s Summer 2023 Interns

Our summer interns have embarked on their journey with The Wall Street Journal! This talented group of 29 journalists will be working for 10 weeks across all of our platforms, including print, wires, WSJ.com, audio, video, photo, graphics and social media. They will be working from bureaus across the U.S., as well as London, Tokyo and Beijing.

Amina Niasse (Markets, New York)

Amina Niasse is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where she studied journalism and served as the features editor for its student-run daily paper, The Daily Trojan. She previously interned at Bloomberg News, Paper Magazine and NewsGuard Technologies. In her free time, she loves reading fiction, watching West African cinema and planning her next travel destination.

Anthony De Leon (Personal Finance, New York)

Anthony De Leon, the F. James Pensiero business reporting intern, is a Chicano born and raised in Fresno. He will graduate from the University of Nevada at Reno, where he studies journalism and media innovation. He has a bachelor’s from California State University, Fresno, where he worked as editor-in-chief of its student newspaper, the Collegian. He previously interned at the Los Angeles Times.

Ben Glickman (Real-Time, New York)

Ben Glickman is a recent graduate of Brown University, where he studied political science and data science. He previously interned at the Financial Times and served as editor-in-chief of his college newspaper, The Brown Daily Herald. He has also written for various local newspapers, including on Cape Cod and in Pelham, N.Y. In his free time, Ben loves to look at birds, eat spicy food and watch movies.

Maggie Eastland (Real Estate, New York)

Maggie Eastland is a rising senior at Notre Dame studying finance and journalism. Now serving as editor-in-chief for The Observer, she revived the student newspaper’s business news beat during her sophomore year. Maggie previously interned at the Dallas Morning News, where she wrote business and real estate stories. She has also interned at the Mackinac Island Town Crier, covering local news. A Michigan native, she loves exploring the outdoors, annotating books, trail running and boxing.

Megan Tagami (Education, New York)

Megan Tagami is a recent graduate of UCLA, where she studied political science and public affairs. She previously interned for the Honolulu Civil Beat, as well as EdSource and CalMatters, where she covered California higher education. She also served as an editor and reporter for the Daily Bruin, UCLA’s college newspaper. She is originally from Honolulu, Hawaii. In her free time, Megan is searching for a good cup of coffee, listening to Taylor Swift or hiking with her family.

Ethan Steinberg (Travel/Consumer, New York)

Ethan Steinberg is a recent graduate of Tufts University, where he studied international relations and served as managing editor of the student newspaper, The Tufts Daily. He previously interned on the entrepreneurship beat at Forbes, with the personal finance newsletter at Morning Brew, and was under general assignment at Boston.com. He has also worked in business development for the local news aggregator, NewsBreak. In his spare time, Ethan enjoys playing classical percussion, reading, and watching baseball.

Roshan Fernandez (Sports, New York)

Roshan Fernandez is a recent graduate of Syracuse University, where he studied journalism and served as sports editor of his student newspaper, The Daily Orange. He previously interned with The Richmond-Times Dispatch’s and Seattle Times’ sports desks. He also interned with National Public Radio’s audience engagement team. In his spare time, he enjoys playing cards with friends and trying new food.

Katie Mogg (Careers & Workplace, New York)

Katie Mogg, a Dow Jones News Fund reporting intern, is a senior at Northeastern University studying journalism. She previously worked as a correspondent on the metro desk of The Boston Globe, where she wrote more than 100 stories and reported on everything from local politics to the World Cup. She also served as the lifestyle editor of her campus newspaper, The Huntington News. Originally from Westchester, N.Y., Katie enjoys attending exercise classes, reading romance novels, trying new foods, and listening to upbeat music.

Ngai Yeung (Corporate, New York)

Ngai Yeung, a Dow Jones News Fund reporting intern, is a recent graduate of the University of Southern California, where she studied journalism and political economy. She previously interned for Bloomberg News and the South China Morning Post. She also has written for Poynter and the Los Angeles Times, and worked as a data reporter for Crosstown covering campaign finance and business in Los Angeles. A native of Hong Kong, a financial hub, Ngai is interested in business investigative reporting. She enjoys exploring new food and asking offbeat questions.

Florence Wu (Audience Engagement, New York)

Florence Wu is a recent graduate of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. She has a bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College, where she studied international politics and economics. Florence previously interned at the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, Stanford’s Center for China’s Economy and Institutions, Addison County Independent, Urban List and the Colorado Times Recorder. In college, she competed in varsity diving and rock climbing and worked part-time as a snowboard instructor.

Antonia Mufarech (WSJ. Magazine, New York)

Antonia Mufarech is pursuing an accelerated master’s at Northwestern University, where she double-majored in journalism and psychology. She previously interned with CNN en Español’s digital team, Warner Bros. Discovery’s HGTV and Smithsonian magazine. She also has written stories for Food Network and worked as a Life & Style editor at her college magazine, North by Northwestern. Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Antonia loves photography, salsa dancing, traveling — and eating good food, and not necessarily in that order.

Jala Everett (Podcast, New York)

Jala Everett is a rising senior at Spelman College studying English, film and visual culture. Jala has previously worked as an editorial intern at Harvard Business Review, a narrative production intern with Blind Plea and The Untold Story: Criminal Injustice Podcast at Lemonada Media, and documentary unit intern at CNN. Jala hails from Cleveland, Ohio. In her free time, Jala can be found cycling on her Peloton, listening to podcasts, spending quality time with loved ones, or planning her next adventure.

Gretchen Lenth (Data Reporting/Investigations, New York)

Gretchen Lenth is a recent graduate from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, where she studied journalism and informatics. She served as the copy editor for her campus’ student newspaper, The Daily Iowan, and worked as web editor for the literary magazine, Fools. Gretchen previously interned at KCCI in Des Moines, Iowa for its investigative team and at The Wichita Beacon in Kansas as a data reporting intern through the Dow Jones News Fund. When she’s not working, Gretchen can be found dancing, reading, and playing video games with friends.

Derryl Barnes Jr. (Video Editing, New York)

Derryl Barnes is a rising senior at the University of Miami studying broadcast journalism and sport administration. He anchors, reports and produces the school’s weekly live news and sports television shows. Derryl spent last summer interning at ESPN and has produced digital/social video content for the Miami Hurricanes athletics department for the past two years. When not in a newsroom or sports arena, he is usually hanging out and cracking corny jokes with his friends and family.

Jake Steinberg (Graphics, New York)

Jake Steinberg is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a master’s degree in cartography and GIS. Jake previously studied journalism at the University of Minnesota. He pivoted to visual storytelling while working as an investigative reporting fellow for Carnegie-Knight News21 and as a radio reporter for Arizona Public Media. Jake’s maps have received numerous design awards, including a spot in the latest volume of the prestigious NACIS Atlas of Design. He fills his free time with long bike rides and meandering walks.

Bea Oyster (Photo Editing, New York)

Bea Oyster is a recent graduate of Smith College, where she studied art history. She previously interned with NBC News and the Smithsonian’s Photographic History Collection. Her work as a freelance photographer has appeared in print and online in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, TIME, The Guardian, Teen Vogue, Bon Appétit and the Los Angeles Times. This summer, Bea looks forward to finding the city’s best French fries, visiting museums and growing her photo book collection.

Daryl Perry (Digital Platform, New York)

Daryl Perry, a Dow Jones News Fund digital intern, is senior at the University of Maryland, where he is studying journalism and creative writing. As a freshman, he worked with The Campus Trainer and WMUC 90.5. Daryl later joined the Diamondback as a Diversions writer and moved to the photo desk in late 2021. Last summer, he was the SEO intern at USA TODAY. Outside of journalism, Daryl enjoys video editing, writing poetry and fiber arts.

Andrea Teres-Martinez (Publishing Desk, New York)

Andrea Teres-Martinez, a Dow Jones News Fund copyediting intern, is a graduate of Boise State University, where she studied integrated media and strategic communications. She previously interned for the Idaho Statesman, where she covered a wide range of topics including child hunger in Boise, state-wide labor shortages, Boise’s housing crisis and Latino affairs. Andrea also served as the News Editor and Editor-in-Chief of Boise State’s student newspaper, The Arbiter. When she’s not working, Andrea likes to read, catch up with friends and spend time outdoors.

Christian Robles (Economics, Washington, D.C.)

Christian Robles is a recent graduate of Yale University, where he studied political science and education. He served as an education/youth services reporter, city desk editor, and public editor for the Yale Daily News. He has previously interned at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the National Coalition on School Diversity. In his free time, he likes to take photos, listen to podcasts, lift weights, and cook new recipes he finds online.

Simon J. Levien (Politics, Washington, D.C.)

Simon J. Levien is a rising senior at Harvard University studying history. He was an editor and reporter at The Harvard Crimson, where he focused on research-intensive stories as well as audience engagement. He previously interned at The Boston Globe covering state politics and will join the POLITICO Journalism Institute this year. He is an alum of AAJA Voices and The New York Times Student Journalism Institute. He is passionate about investigative storytelling, digital strategy, and historical narratives in reporting.

Isaac Yu (Law Bureau, Washington, D.C.)

Isaac Yu is a senior at Yale studying American studies, and was managing editor of the Yale Daily News. He also is a fellow with the Yale Journalism Initiative. He previously interned with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the New Haven Independent. A proud resident of Garland, Texas, he enjoys musical theater and crosswords.

Wendy Guzman (Corporate, Chicago)

Wendy Guzman is a recent graduate of Michigan State University, where she studied journalism, public relations and graphic design. She previously interned at Automotive News and at Forbes, where she worked on the annual Top Colleges list. She wrote for MSU’s student newspaper, The State News, and was campus news editor in her junior year. Wendy, who is originally from Detroit, enjoys cooking and attending concerts and art festivals in her free time.

Lindsey Choo (Technology, San Francisco)

Lindsey Choo is a recent graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She previously covered financial technology at POLITICO’s tech news site, Protocol, and wrote about healthcare issues for the Center for Healthy Aging. Lindsey was a senior staff writer for her undergraduate college newspaper, The UCSD Guardian. Born and raised in Singapore, Lindsey enjoys boxing, reading, and playing board games.

Anastasiia Malenko (World, London)

Anastasiia Malenko is a recent graduate of Stanford University, where she studied political science and economics. She was a news and magazine editor at The Stanford Daily. Soon after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Anastasiia joined the Kyiv Independent as a contributing writer on the North American desk. She also has written for the Ukrainian media outlet Studway and interned at USAFacts. In her free time, she loves overanalyzing movies and catching up on coffee recommendations.

Nuha Dolby (Business, London)

Nuha Dolby, the Overseas Press Club’s Roy Rowan reporting fellow, is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, her journalism has appeared with the Associated Press, Bloomberg News, POLITICO, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and others. She is the 2023 Aubespin Scholar from the American Copy Editors Society and a 2023 Environmental Justice Reporting Fellow with the Uproot Project. Nuha is passionate about data and using it to muckrake for public good. In her free time, she knits, draws (unfunny) comics and laments the great heartbreak involved in being a Wisconsin sports fan.

Humza Jilani (U.K./World, London)

Humza Jilani is a recent graduate of the University of Oxford, where he studied international relations as a Marshall Scholar. He received his bachelor’s degree in social studies from Harvard University. He has interned for Foreign Policy magazine in Washington, D.C., and for Reuters and The Economist in London. An avid traveler, Humza covered the death of Queen Elizabeth II, a migration crisis in Poland, copper mining in Zambia, the gig economy in Colombia, and digital goat trading in Pakistan. Born and raised in Texas, he loves exploring new hiking trails and experimenting with recipes from different cultures.

Mari Nøvik (Energy, London)

Mari Nøvik is a former reporter for the Nordic news wire Infront and a former feature writer for the Norwegian Financial Daily in Oslo. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and a master’s degree in financial journalism from City University, London. The Norway native has also lived in Ghana and Vietnam, where she studied Development Economics.

Sylvan Lebrun (Reporting, Tokyo)

Sylvan Lebrun is a rising senior at Yale University studying comparative literature. She served as the managing editor of the Yale Daily News, and spent two years reporting on New Haven municipal politics and social services. She previously interned at The Blade in Toledo, Ohio and Pittsburgh Magazine. Sylvan grew up in Tokyo, Japan. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, reading, playing electric guitar, and visiting museums.

Nick Yang Zirui (Digital Platform, Beijing)

Nick Yang Zirui is a recent graduate of Hong Kong Baptist University, where he studied journalism and was editor-in-chief of The Young Reporter, a campus publication at HKBU. Nick previously interned at South China Morning Post for its China Desk and was a trainee reporter at Hebei Television. Besides being an enthusiast for journalism, he loves playing sports in his spare time, especially football and swimming. He is preparing himself for his graduate studies starting this fall at Columbia University.
