There’s no denying that music can have a huge influence on the creative process. Although we both have backgrounds in music and consider it an integral part of our work, we have very different preferences and rituals around using music (or a lack of music) for creativity, productivity, and inspo.

In this series, we share tidbits about our personal processes and habits. Plus, we share two (yes, two!) curated Spotify playlists of music we’re listening to right now — WTVS. it may be (this is a judgment-free space).

Itai, Designer: Psychedelic landscapes

This week has been hectic and my playlist reflects this in its diversity. I start the playlist with an upbeat piece by The Comet Is Coming that is six minutes and forty-five seconds long. I use this song this week to try and keep my energy up as I nailed down a composition on my Illustrator board.

From there, this playlist really explores the fringes of my musical taste. I used this week to experiment with how using music as a psychoactive agent could affect my productivity. This playlist is a mindful, inward-looking journey into psychedelic musical landscapes. Enjoy!

Shelby, Writer: Female voices

For this installment of WTVS. We’re Listening To, my playlist has one major theme: female voices. Every single song on my playlist is either written/performed by a female musician or heavily features a female artist.

Believe it or not, this was a happy accident. I wanted this playlist to reflect what I’m actually listening to right now so to make things easy for myself, I started creating it by simply adding songs from my “On Repeat” Spotify playlist (what can I say? I love a shortcut). When I looked at the final list, there were maybe two songs that didn’t have a female artist on them (which have since been removed). And thus, the female voices theme was born!

This playlist covers genres ranging from hip hop to indie and voices from the US, Israel, Ethiopia, and the UK. While it’s certainly not an all-inclusive list of all of the female musicians I love (that would be nearly impossible) it covers the ones I have on repeat right now.

Highlights from my playlist:

“Not Another Love Song” — Ella Mai

“Amen” — Eden Derso

“Come Over” — Jorja Smith

“Summer Girl” — HAIM
