Seoul — November 16th, 2019

Women Who Code Seoul (WWCode Seoul) successfully hosted a year-end party with the generous support of two sponsoring companies, Microsoft Korea and Jaranda. Over 200 people attended this network event, including 182 attendees and 22 directors and volunteers. Aiming to inspire women to excel in technology careers, the event also featured 14 speakers, who are all women in the tech industry with various levels of experience.

WWCode Seoul is a community organized to foster the growth of women in tech industry and develop connection among the members. Since October 2018, when WWCode Seoul was officially launched, it has become one of the fastest growing chapters of global WWCode community, its membership reaching 1000 + on Facebook. To celebrate growing into community with 1000 + members in the very first year and to meaningfully wrap up the year 2019, 22 directors and volunteers gathered online and offline every week for two months to organize this one-day event. Months of preparation allowed this large-scale event to invite more attendees and add programs, including keynotes, main and lightning talks, and demos.

#ApplaudHer

As directors of WWCode Seoul, Soojung Kim and Yujin Chung started off the event by delivering keynote speeches and introducing the vision of the community and what this community aims for. 2019 year end review, covering news from WWCode global community and WWCode Seoul, was also shared by the speakers of the Keynote Speeches. Next there were two main sessions, led by two speakers Sayun Jung and Hanbyeol Kang. Sayun, a developer, Youtuber and cartoonist, gave a presentation about ‘If not this way? Make your own way!’. Hanbyeol shared her own experience about working on her individual projects, with the presentation’s title ‘Who are we making toy projects for?’.

The second session was divided into two sections so that more speakers can share their insights and ideas, and total 9 speakers delivered inspirational talks from their experiences. Two speakers’ presentations were about the interface between arts and technology: Sosun Park’s gave a talk on ‘Creative Coding’ and shared some of her own projects with the attendees, and Mina Hyeon shared her knowledge about ‘Blending Art and Emotion to Spatial Narrative in XR’. The audience attentively listened to the talks, and was very keen to find out more about as they were eye-catching topics, highlighting the collaboration of arts and technology in most of the tech communities.
