Okay, I get it. You might be busy right now that you cannot watch these TED talks. You are probably trying to impress your girl on the next table or escape from your boss, who is about to toast you for something you did not do.

At least, get these TED talks on your watchlist. Trust me. All of them are worth saving for later.

Or choose an easy step: let me take on you on a quick deep dive into each of these speeches.

How to achieve your most ambitious goals | Stephen Duneier

“ If you do not make the right decision when you are on the couch, no decision occurs at the top of the mountain.”

Stephen simplifies the complexity of accomplishing big dreams by the simple method of splitting down and making marginal adjustments. He demonstrates his methodology with Chuck Close, one of the highest-earning artists in the world.

Chuck uses the technique of breaking down his paintings in smaller equivalent chunks, which lead to larger-than-life masterpieces. Considering it as a metaphor, Stephen puts forth that if each of us segregates our goals and make marginal improvements with the inch by inch & day by day mindset, we will be able to fulfill our long term vision. And the best part is that he makes you believe that it is as easy as it sounds.

He further talks about applying the process of marginal adjustments in our daily lives. He quotes the example of how he mastered the German language just by eliminating music during his daily commute of 90 minutes. And how he put himself in the Guinness Book of records by acquiring skills that do not even relate to his profession. Pretty amazing. Isn’t it?

The key takeaway is that you and I should not be intimidated by the sheer volume of the tasks and risks involved in pursuing our ambitions. Instead, we have to realize that it is the act of standing still, which is the riskiest action of all.

In the end, it all boils down to how we stop being spectators of our decision process and start being active participants of it. Realize and understand that the most important step a person can take is always the next one. So take it before it is too late.

Sleep is your superpower | Matt walker

“Men who sleep for 4 –5 hours a night have the level of testosterone, which is that of someone ten years senior to them.”

That is how Matt kicks off his speech bringing the audience to attention, especially the men. He takes you on a rollercoaster of facts and findings that could make you feel guilty of all those sleepless nights that you would have wasted doing hardly anything productive.

He then makes it clear, however, and whatever you do, you cannot sustain that in your memory if you do not sleep enough. Most of you got to be familiar with the concept of pulling an all-nighter. If you are a believer of it, sorry to say, but you would not be able to imbibe some medical and societal implications that Matt reveals. The direct relationship between sleep and aging will let you question the amount of importance you would have given to your sleep throughout your life.

“Sleep is a non-negotiable biological necessity.”

The remarkably shocking findings disclosed by Matt related to how a single hour of sleep can influence the rate of mortality positively is just astounding. He shows the harsh reality if not done right and backs it up with reasonings, and finally ends the speech with a perfect one-liner.

And that is also my favorite part of the whole speech. When the host asks Matt the solution to sleep when people are not just able to do so, and Matt replies to him with the following words.

“You would never sit at the dinner table to be hungry, so why would you lie on the bed waiting to get sleepy?”

Simply genius! Isn’t it?

Neuromarketing and Future of AI-Driven Behaviour Design | Prince Ghuman

Have you ever felt used by technology? If not, this Ted talk will open your senses to some nasty realities of using Artificial Intelligence that has taken control over human behaviors. Being a neuro marketer, Prince explains about the possibilities of combining neuroscience with marketing strategies.

Companies make use of OCEAN analysis, which gives them the psychological bio of consumers. Through this test, our perspectives, dislikes, and inclinations are so easy to determine that these companies can fluently manipulate our behavioral patterns for their benefits. (Cool info: Netflix’s The Social Dilemma deals with this dark stuff in detail.)

Furthermore, Prince throws light on many pieces of consumer manipulation techniques by using deep fakes and face swaps that are detrimental to what we call consumer privacy. In the future, do not be surprised if your facial details are used for creating target ads with a character sporting your face. How freaky would that be? Nevertheless, you cannot deny the eventual possibility that this will create a long-lasting impact on you. So you will start having desires for the products. He says,

“Money is outdated. And in the digital world, money does not have to change hands to extract value from the user.”

Every time you use loyalty cards like a post or sign up into an app, a new type of value is extracted from you without your diligence. And your data is way costlier than what you pay for it.

Do you still have the notion of free apps as free? The notion of free will change once and forever after hearing Prince’s take on AI. It is just not one of those usual speeches where you will be motivated to do something. But I am pretty sure it will widen your perspective, and most importantly, you will think twice before blindly trusting those fancy benefits offered by technology. And if that happens, there is nothing that can stop the consumer revolution within you from happening.
