Are you feeling inspired from within?

Or are you feeling inspired due to an external phenomenon?

You got to understand that both are entirely two different things. You might ask: how?

First of all, you got to ask: why does it matter?

Maybe you’re a tech geek. You may adore Steve Jobs from the bottom of your heart. You might have seen him unraveling Macintosh or launching the ‘Think Different’ campaign numerous times to date and felt inspired every time you watched it. You might have even started working on your first start-up, your passion project. And that’s fine.

Or maybe you’re a public speaker. You idealize Oprah Winfrey for her boldness, kindness, and the way she articulates a message. Inspired by her, you might have practiced speaking in a hall full of nobody or before your bathroom mirror. Whereas, the speaker in you wants you to land a speech publicly. Maybe you are even set up for your first big speech that’s due next month. And that’s fine again.

Or maybe you’re a soccer fan. You may fancy Bekham’s long-range shots or Ronaldo’s bicycle kicks. You might have seen some of your favorite shots time and again. Inspired by them, you might have even started working out various kicking styles bending it like Beckham. And this is fine too.

But, did it last long? Did that surge of inspiration lived through you for a long while?

The answer is most probably not, if not always.

Want to know why? Because they all happened due to an external phenomenon.

Here below is the secret ingredient that Master Shifu promised Po in Kung Fu Panda that didn’t makeup to the final cut of the film. (pun intended)

The best kind of inspiration is the one that happens from within.

Though one can have numerous people as inspiration, such an inspiration often tends to be like lightning. One moment, it will be everywhere. And the next moment, gone into the darkness like a wisp of cloud.

Whereas an inspiration that originates from a very personal reason for a specific purpose sticks with you like gum. It doesn’t loosen up. It doesn’t wear-and-tear. It doesn’t fade gently into the good night, as Dylan Thomas said. It could be the death of a family member who meant a lot to you or a deprived situation where you would have lost everything or even a simple intuition to help your poor community and lead your people to a better future. Somehow such a personal reason would act like a spark that pulls the trigger off an everlasting wildfire which would take you to sky-scraping heights and light the whole goddamn world.

To put it all together, feeling inspired from within and feeling inspired due to an external phenomenon are entirely two different things. Because the latter stays only for a moment while the former lives forever.

So be inspired. Be inspired from within.
