There’s a saying that Germany’s welfare system is the most efficient in Europe. That’s true, if efficiency is measured by how many trees can be felled sending forms and requiring other useless paperwork per person in need (that they also frequently lose, requiring multiple attempts at transmission). Anyone who’s spent time navigating the Jobcenter knows it’s not a safety net — it’s a jungle. The kind that promises help, but where the predators are paperwork, policy shifts, and procedural opacity. Not to mention gross incompetence, and outright, in-your-face discrimination, and of every kind.
The Set Up
This is not to disparage every individual employee at every Job Center in Germany. I have met a few, with emphasis on the single digits, under five, who are friendly and helpful. Most of the front counter staff are as horrifically undertrained as they are racist, sexist and generally not capable of doing any more than receiving paperwork.
