HomeOwner: What is Vastu? The architect, the builder, even my grandma seems to know it and have different versions of where the kitchen should be. Who is right? more importantly, does it really matter?
TheAncientOne: The answer to all these questions lie in the fundamental principle of ‘why’ Vastu is followed. We all seem to ignore this important side of it, that we sometimes end up ignoring the entire idealogy as it might seem fruitless.
Simply put, Vastu Shastra is a scientific method to plan your spaces in as per the climatic conditions. It simply orients the building in such a way that it receives ample sunlight, wind, heat, rain/snow, etc. for a comfortable stay.
We call it by various names, Vastu, Feng Shui, Sustainable Architecture, Wabi Sabi, Climate Responsiveness. They’re all principles developed on the same basic idea: Comfortable Living
The location of origin of these principles being different, there are various versions of the same ideology in practice.
One might suggest North West for cooking, while the other South East. What we fail to understand is that both of these are true in their original locations, India(Vastu) and China(Feng Shui) respectively.
The confusion arises when one mismatches, and tries building a Bamboo Hut in the Thar Desert.
Here is a simple chart to follow Vastu while planning your house in India.
