To stop the madness, deliver your ballot by hand
The GOP is a wounded animal.
They’re looking at a probable loss next week, maybe in the Senate and quite likely in the White House.
But wounded animals can be dangerous. And we’re talking about a group of people here that is refusing to adapt to new realities and listen to the majority of people in this country.
There’s no question Joe Biden will win the popular vote. There’s no question more votes will be cast for Democratic Congressional candidates than for Republicans.
There’s no question that few people in this country, even among Republicans, want an outright ban on abortion. There’s no question that a majority of people in the country want to keep the Affordable Care Act, and a large portion of those who want it repealed still want to keep some of its provisions. There’s no question that a supermajority of people in this country think we need to do more to protect the environment and fight climate change. There’s no question that a supermajority of people in this country support gay marriage. There’s no question that a majority of people want stricter gun laws.
There’s no question that these trends will continue as younger generations replace older generations. We may even go outright socialist at some point.
The GOP has responded not by working with people to meet their concerns but by clinging to power through manipulation and bullying.
Just this week:
- Jared Kushner taunted Black Lives Matter activists.
- Donald Trump Jr., author of the book Triggered, posted a picture this week meant to “make lib heads explode.”
- Republicans who stopped Obama from appointing Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court rushed through the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett. The House Judiciary GOP celebrated with sarcastic birthday wishes for Hillary Clinton.
This blog will rarely delve into electoral politics. We’ll eventually get contributions from some people who are dedicated problem-solvers.
But the task for the next week is clear. We have to vote out the GOP. If they get four more years, they’ll spend them throwing up more roadblocks while letting more people die through their incompetence (COVID) and negligence (a heartless attitude toward asylum-seekers).
Once they’re gone, we can have more productive and more realistic discussions about what we can accomplish over the next four years and beyond, as the current GOP hard-cores fade from power.
And here’s the important note:
You should turn in your ballot by hand. Then check to make sure it arrived.
We only have a week left, and if you mail your ballot, it might not arrive in time. The Supreme Court just made it clear that states are under no obligation to accept a ballot that arrives late.

Don’t take this for granted. The GOP will try every trick in the book to stay in power. We can’t let that happen.
