Have you ever wonder why justice is blind? why is it blind? is it not good that justice should have eyes so it can see how much crime is happening in front of her? and how many times criminals escape. here we will know what is the meaning of the justice statue, why the statues eye covered with ribbon, and why actually justice is blind?

let’s start from lady justice, usually, in movies and dramas, we get to see a statue with a ribbon covering her eyes. and there is a very amazing story behind this. let me first clearly tell you about the statue, it is a statue of a woman. She got blindfold on the eyes, a sword in the right hand which is double-edged and a balance scale in the left hand. In some places, the position of sword and balance scale may switch. She wears a special type of clothing which is called Toga. and sometimes you may find a snake beneath the feet of the lady justice statue.

lets first get to know the meaning of these things then we will find out why justice is blind. So at first why lady justice is women? According to history lady justice was made like a Roman goddess, the name of the Roman goddess is Iustitia also Justicia, also in Greek mythology, a similar type of Goddess is described whose name is Themis and similarly in Egyptian mythology goddess of justice Maat (Mayet) is also described. from here we get a goddess of justice.

She got a balance scale in her hand because she can differentiate truth or lie based on facts and evidence. The person who got more facts and evidence will get justice from the lady justice.

Lady Justice wears a Toga because in the time of Romans this type of dress considers as a scholarly dress and even today these types of dresses were worn by judges but with some modification.

The sword represents that the lady justice not only makes the decision but also make it enforce and have the power to enforce it.

The snakes under the feet represent to crush the evil under the feet. This means the lady justice crushes the evil and evilness along with giving justice and make it enforce.

and the blindfold represents that she can not see who is standing in front of her, and how powerful is he. this lady is blind and only judges based on the evidence and it doesn’t matter to her that what she thinks. but the judging is based on the number of evidence placed on her balance scale.

This the motto of our justice system, the judge never take decisions emotionally, but by the evidence and law. but this is all about lady justice.

but the blindfold over the eyes is a very old tradition. in India it is old as 1000 years tradition before the courts and before the judiciary, in panchayats, the judges blindfold themselves and listen to both the clients and make the right decision. at last, the only thing matters is evidence and law. no matter what the judges think.
