The lime industry is facing increasing pressure to reduce CO2 emissions and transition to more sustainable production methods. While Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture, Storage, and Utilization (CCSU) technologies such as the Oxyfuel method and the Leilac direct separation system have emerged as potential solutions, Natural Carbon Offset Solutions (NCS) offered by X4LIME show significant promise in addressing the challenges of decarbonization with reduced costs and faster implementation.

Comparing Technologies: Oxyfuel, Leilac, and X4LIME NCS

At the moment the “Costs of CO2 avoidance” calculations by the Leilac set the benchmark for the decarbonisation of the cement industry.

The Oxyfuel method involves the use of pure oxygen in the clinker production process, replacing ambient air. This technology can increase the CO2 concentration in the kiln exhaust gas up to 100%, allowing for efficient CO2 separation. However, the estimated costs of CO2 avoidance are relatively high, ranging from €70 to €131/t CO2 by 2030 and €65 to €87/t CO2 by 2050.

The Leilac direct separation system utilizes a unique calcination method to separate CO2 from process emissions, with avoidance costs of €37–38/t CO2. While this system offers a lower cost compared to the Oxyfuel method, it still requires substantial capital investments for greenfield and retrofit installations.

On the other hand, X4LIME’s Natural Carbon Offset Solutions, such as reforestation and afforestation projects, provide a more accessible and cost-effective alternative. With no CAPEX requirements and an OPEX cost of only €20/t CO2, X4LIME offers a competitive solution that can be implemented within 3–6 months.

The Benefits of Natural Carbon Offset Solutions In addition to lower costs, NCS offers several advantages over CCS and CCSU technologies. These solutions address the challenges of capture, utilization, and storage of CO2 emissions without the need for complex transportation networks. By focusing on nature-based solutions, NCS leverages the power of ecosystems to absorb and store CO2 emissions, while also promoting biodiversity and supporting local communities.

Examples of successful NCS projects include the partnership between ForeverBamboo and X4LIME, which generates carbon credits for the lime industry through bamboo reforestation

and the initiatives promoted by Planet Net Zero, which supports a range of carbon offset projects across various industries.

Costs of CO2 Avoidance Comparison Table

While CCS and CCSU technologies show potential in reducing CO2 emissions in the lime industry, Natural Carbon Offset Solutions offered by X4LIME offer a more accessible, cost-effective, and faster alternative for immediate action. By embracing NCS, the lime industry can accelerate its transition towards a sustainable and carbon-neutral future.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the lime industry is taking important steps towards carbon neutrality by embracing various approaches such as advanced technologies like the Leilac direct separation system and oxyfuel method, as well as natural carbon offset solutions like those proposed by X4LIME. However, to ensure the full potential of these solutions is realized, industry associations, such as the European Lime Association (EuLA) need to advocate for policy changes at the European Commission level.

Currently, the European Union Emissions Trading System (ETS) does not include credits for carbon sequestration through reforestation and other natural carbon offset solutions.

“Lime industry associations should lobby the European Commission to amend the ETS regulations to incorporate such credits. This would provide further incentives for companies to invest in nature-based solutions and accelerate the industry’s transition towards carbon neutrality.”- says Carlo Cella QualiCal CEO

By considering a range of approaches, fostering collaboration between stakeholders, and advocating for supportive policies, the lime industry can successfully transition to a more sustainable and carbon-neutral future, contributing to global climate goals and reducing its environmental impact.
