If you were asked to close your eyes and to tell the first image that comes to mind when someone mentions Helsinki, you’d probably say the Helsinki Cathedral. At least this is what happens with most people. After all, it is the most recognizable spot of the city.

Magnificent Helsinki Cathedral is an outstanding example of neoclassical-style architecture. The Cathedral features brilliant façades and impressive Corinthian pillars. The central dome of the cathedral was designed to allow natural light into the cathedral from many angles. This unique structure reaches about 260 feet (80 meters) above sea level, and is one of the church’s most recognizable features. Notice the symmetrical plan of the church, visible in its four smaller domes and equal arms. Sculptures of the twelve apostles on the roof of the church guard the city. Given its historical and architectural significance, no wonder that the Cathedral has become the symbol of the whole of Helsinki.

The striking Helsinki Cathedral is at the city’s historic center. The magnificent cathedral was originally designed by Architect Carl Ludvig Engel and planner Johan Albrecht Ehrenström as a tribute to Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, the Grand Duke of Finland. For many years Finland was part of Russia and was known as the Great Duchy of Finland. The church is part of Helsinki’s Empire era centre and a landmark for those arriving by sea.

Earlier known by the name St. Nicholas Church and Great Cathedral, the current main church of the Helsinki Diocese was completed in 1852. Since the completion of this mystifying cathedral in 1852, the Helsinki Cathedral has been imposing its beauty over the Senate Square of Helsinki- right in the middle of the city (map).

The Cathedral, by Carl Ludvig Engel, rising on the northern side of the Senate Square is the stage of national and academic festive services and one of the most popular tourist sights. The Cathedral has been captured in many photos and can be seen during all kinds of media coverage, because many events and protests take place in front of it.

Admire the grand exterior of Helsinki Cathedral and stop at a small souvenir shop in the bell tower. Exhibitions at the Crypt (Kirkkokatu 18) during the summer also serves as a souvenir shop Cathedral Shop. Notice the smaller buildings around Helsinki Cathedral, all constructed as part of Engel’s Senate Square.

Helsinki Cathedral is located in the neighborhood of Kruununhaka, in the heart of Helsinki. This popular attraction is about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from Helsinki Airport. It is open daily; however, the souvenir shop and church café are open only during the summer. Use the small parking lot in front of the cathedral’s main entrance.

Visit Helsinki Cathedral to admire one of the city’s most wonderful buildings and learn about the history of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland.
