UK’s Cop Offers Lessons On Crypto

In an article titled “The changing face of crime — the world of cryptocurrency”, Sergeant Phil Ariss offers valuable lessons on cryptocurrency and emphasises on why it is important for law enforcement officers to understand how it works, in order for the officers to be completely equipped to catch criminals who deal with cryptocurrencies.

Sergent Phill Ariss mainly focusses on digital assets- cryptocurrencies, he has worked with multiple national and international team. He mainly focuses on delivering training to cybercrime units.

Police from the U.K city of Leicestershire issued a statement regarding the February arrest of darknet vendor, Paul Johnson, on the 18th of April, 2020, where they stated that Johnson was jailed for a total of 8 years and is believed to have made $2.5 million, of which they seized roughly $375,300 in cryptocurrency assets. Johnson has made his millions through the sale of narcotics on the dark web.

Sergent Ariss mentioned that “In the case of Paul Johnson, who was jailed for eight years for trafficking drugs online, the investigating officers identified that Bitcoins were being used and contacted me before they executed the warrant at his home address. We were able to advise the officers on what to look out for.”

He also stated that “As more and more criminals turn to using Bitcoins and other methods of financial privacy, it is important we know what to look out for, and we regularly train officers and staff about the signs of its usage, denying criminals the opportunity to benefit financially.”
