Why is color consistency important to my brand?

Starbucks green, UPS brown, Cadbury purple; all examples of colors that immediately come to mind when we think of certain products. When brands adopt a color, they want to ensure that the color remains consistent throughout their marketing material or risk losing their brand identity. Take Coca-Cola, for example.

In 2014, Coke Life was introduced, advertising less sugar and natural ingredients but with the classic coke flavor. Another ingredient they left out? The signature red on the bottle and marketing material. The red that consumers associate with the Coke brand was replaced with an earthly green to represent the natural flavoring in the product. The change in appearance and brand colors had a profound effect on sales. Within three years, sales of Coke Life would be lackluster in the USA and the product would be completely discontinued in the UK. Stripping a Coke product of its signature color caused loyal fans of the original to bypass the healthier product and chose the recognizable classic Coke or Diet Coke.

This highlights the importance of brand consistency within marketing. Brands know that staying true to their colors is vital to sales and awareness, which is why more and more companies are turning to color management engines to ensure their colors are consistent on screens and in print.
