Scarce resources drive want, but the fun keeps you playing far longer.

Pioneers, in our previous No Free Lunch article we looked at the principles of “A Healthy Economy”, this time we’ll be looking specifically at resources. In XOCIETY resources will come in various facets.

XOCIETY resources will span a wide range of useable and tradeable items. From raw materials like MOTOUS to goods and items for land development and items for use in raids.

Want to know a bit more about MOTUS and its uses? Check out this thread.

Resource Scarcity

The idea of resource scarcity is rooted in the basic economic principle of supply and demand. When a resource is scarce, the demand for it increases, leading to higher prices and greater competition. This concept can be applied to the sustainability of an economy, as scarcity can encourage resource conservation and promote innovation in finding alternative solutions.

Inducing scarcity can be achieved in various ways. One method is to reduce the overall supply of a good, either by decreasing production or through natural depletion. Another way is to increase demand by stoking desire among consumers through marketing and branding strategies, creating a perception of exclusivity and value.

Induced Scarcity in gaming, via MOTUS

When we look at gaming, the use of varying grades of core resources such as ‘MOTUS’ can stimulate desire among players, creating a competitive environment. Players will crave the higher quality MOTUS and compete to obtain it, leading to deeper engagement and investment in the gaming experience. This can be seen as a form of artificial scarcity, intentionally created to increase the perceived value of the resource and motivate players to engage more deeply.

As competition for superior grades of MOTUS is more challenging, players must put in effort to earn it, reflecting the idea of ‘No Free Lunch.’ This concept suggests that rewards are only earned through effort and hard work, and there are no shortcuts or freebies in the pursuit of success.

In conclusion, the idea of resource scarcity can bolster the sustainability of an economy by encouraging resource conservation and innovation. Inducing scarcity can be achieved by reducing the supply or increasing demand through marketing and branding strategies. The use of varying grades of core resources in gaming can stimulate desire among players, creating a competitive environment and deeper engagement. The idea of ‘No Free Lunch’ reflects the importance of effort and hard work in earning rewards.
