If you’ve been paying attention to today’s news from the NBA, you may have seen that our CEO, Alex Hertel, will be on a panel with some of the top names in sports and technology to discuss the future of augmented reality (AR) at next year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) conference in Austin, Texas.

When it comes to pro sports, there are a few things that immediately spring to mind: the tailgating, the roar of the crowd, the excitement on the field, for some — the way a ballpark hotdog snaps — all remind them of family, friends and fun at their favorite game. One thing that doesn’t always pop into their heads is the growing amount of technology that populates modern stadiums and arenas. For example, behind the scenes at Golden 1 Center — the home of the Sacramento Kings — is a 6,000 square foot data center, with over 700 miles of fiber-optic cable and the capacity to support a wi-fi hotspot for every 17 visitors.

That’s just a taste of the changes that are coming for visitors at the top sports venues. Cutting-edge augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), Internet of Things and video streaming innovations are all making their way to sports fans. Some teams are even creating new functionalities for parts of the stadium infrastructure that have traditionally been ignored like turnstiles and ticket counters. With a digital facelift, these too will become part of a larger network of interactive devices that engage patrons and make their visits more enjoyable.

This is why we’re so excited to join Los Angeles Chargers lineman Russell Okung, Sacramento Kings CTO Ryan Montoya, and AR/VR Futurist, Charlie Fink to discuss sports technology and particularly the future of augmented reality in sports. If you, too, want to see this panel as part of the 2019 SXSW lineup, please help us by voting for it here: https://panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote/87989

Note: you’ll need to have a SXSW account to help pick the panels, though registration is free and easy.

We hope to see you in Austin next year!
