Biden Reverses Key Trump Policies With Executive Orders

17 New Policies Signed Into Law on His First Day

--

Just hours after his inauguration, US President Joe Biden has signed 17 executive orders addressing vital issues like the COVID-19 pandemic, immigration and racial inequality. The scale of these executive orders was significantly larger than some of his predecessors in their first day in office, and reflects his commitment to reverse Trump’s more controversial decisions.

Major Policy Reversals

  • rejoining the Paris Climate Accord and World Health Organization (WHO)
  • rescinding the travel ban that targeted Muslim-majority and African countries
  • stopping the construction of the border wall by ending the national emergency declaration that funded it
  • defending the DACA program for young undocumented immigrants by calling on Congress to grant permanent status and a path to citizenship for them

Executive Orders for the Pandemic

Biden has signed an order requiring the use of face masks and social distancing in federal lands and buildings for the next 100 days. Additionally, he has brought back the Directorate for Global Health Security and Biodefense unit within the National Security Council, whose removal by the Trump administration was believed to have reduced the federal government’s ability to effectively counter the pandemic.

What Does this Mean?

These executive orders reflect his commitment to alleviating the impact of the pandemic. Meanwhile, his policy actions on immigration and racial equity signifies that both will be important aspects of his agenda for the first 100 days.

In terms of foreign policy, the American rejoining of both the Paris Climate Accord and World Health Organization will see America strengthening its global engagements and contributions in key issues like public health and climate change prevention.
