Following Joe Biden’s inauguration, China decided to sanction 28 officials from the Trump Administration. The most notable official affected is Trump’s former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The sanctioned officials and their families will be prohibited from doing business with China, as well as entering the mainland, Hong Kong and Macau.

Why Did China Do This?

The announcement came a day after the Trump Administration declared that China was committing genocide in the Xinjiang region.

China’s foreign ministry released a statement, stating: “Over the past few years, some anti-China politicians in the United States, out of their selfish political interests and prejudice and hatred against China and showing no regard for the interests of the Chinese and American people, have planned, promoted and executed a series of crazy moves.”

Who Was Sanctioned?

Other than Pompeo, those on the list include Robert O’Brien (National Security Advisor), Alex Azar (Health Secretary) and Kelly Craft (United Nations Ambassador). However, the statement released did not reveal the full list of officials affected.

This is the latest incident marking deteriorating relations between the two countries. This is not the first time that China has imposed sanctions on American officials — last July, a number of Republican senators were sanctioned over interference in China’s internal affairs.
