Sexual Harassment Allegations Against New York Governor Cuomo
Written by Keevan Martanto
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has been accused by multiple women of sexual harassment and misconduct, including inappropriate touching, propositioning, and sexually-charged comments.
The governor, widely considered a “hero” due to his response to the COVID-19 pandemic, has since faced massive scrutiny due to these allegations and other scandals relating to his administration’s conduct.
New York State Attorney General Letita James has authorized an independent investigation into these accusations amidst public pressure and calls for his resignation.
Allegations
On February 24, Lindsey Boylan, who worked at the New York Economic Development Agency in 2015, published an essay detailing the multiple questionable interactions she had with Cuomo, including inappropriate touching and sexual comments.
A few days later, Charlotte Bennet, who worked as a policy advisor in the Cuomo Administration until November 2020, also alleged that the governor pried into her sex life through numerous inappropriate comments.
This was then followed by allegations from 6 additional women who had experienced workplace harassment and sexual misconduct against Cuomo both during his tenure as Governor and previously.
Responses from Congressional Delegation and President Biden
22 of New York’s House Congressional delegation have called for Cuomo’s resignation, alongside its two Senators: Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Kirsen Gillibrand.
Nearly 120 members of the NY State Assembly have similarly urged him to step down, opening up an impeachment inquiry against him.
President Joe Biden has supported an independent investigation into the said harassment claims. He has even gone further by supporting Cuomo’s prosecution if these allegations are proven to be true.
Cuomo’s Response
Cuomo has since apologized for his sexual comments against his accusers. Additionally his office has called for an investigation into these claims, but has denied that the more serious allegations are true.
He has since attacked lawmakers calling for his resignation, accusing them of bowing to the pressure of “cancel culture” and being “reckless and dangerous” for pressuring to resign before the investigation is completed.
