House Votes to Impeach Trump for a Second Time
Trump Becomes Only President to be Impeached Twice
Hours ago, the US House of Representatives voted 232–197 to impeach Trump for “incitement of insurrection” following the storming of the Capitol by his supporters. Prior to the incident, Trump had encouraged his supporters to turn up in Washington D.C. to protest the counting of Joe Biden’s electoral college votes.
All Democrats and 10 House Republicans voted in favour of impeachment.
What Happens Now?
Trump has become the first ever President to be impeached twice. The final decision now lies in the hands of the Senate. A two-thirds majority is required for the bid to succeed.
Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell has said that the impeachment trial will only occur after Biden’s inauguration.
If Trump is successfully convicted, he will be disallowed from running for President in the 2024 race.
