T he nominees of the 2021 Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, were announced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas on 15th March. This slate of nominees has attracted praise for its diversity, especially because of the #OscarsSoWhite scandal that surfaced in previous years over the underrepresentation of ethnic minorities.

Notable Nominees

Not only are 9 of the 20 acting nominees from ethnic minority backgrounds, two women — Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell — have been nominated for Best Director, an accolade that has traditionally been granted to males, marking the first time in the history of the awards that more than one female has been nominated in this category.

Riz Ahmed, nominated for his role in Sound of Metal, has become the first Muslim to be in the running for Best Actor, one of the most prestigious awards presented. Additionally, this is the first year that two actors of Asian heritage have been featured in the leading male category, with Steven Yeun in Minari becoming the first Asian-American to be nominated for this award.

The late Chadwick Boseman has also become the first person of colour to be nominated posthumously. In addition, Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson are the first black women to earn recognition in the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category.
