On 20 Mar, Turkish President Erdogan issued a decree that withdrew Turkey from the Istanbul convention, sparking nationwide protests that have seen thousands take to the streets. This treaty was considered by women’s rights activists as an important feature in protecting victims of domestic violence and providing equality to all, especially at a time when femicide rates have been rising in the country.

Decree: an official order.

Femicide: the murder of a female on the basis of her gender.

Erdogan’s decision comes after many conservatives expressed concern that the treaty jeopardised Turkey’s traditional values and encouraged divorce and homosexuality. Erdogan himself said,

“We will not leave room for a handful of deviants who try to turn the debate into a tool of hostility to our values”.

He added that domestic laws can ensure women’s rights better than international accords.

This move was not well-received by many, particularly because violence against women has been a serious issue in Turkey. According to the World Health Organisation, at least 38% of Turkish females have experienced domestic violence. Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, stated that this decision sends “a dangerous message across the world” regarding women’s rights.
