The BBC recently published a report highlighting detailed allegations of systemic rape towards Uighur women in detention camps in Xinjiang, China. Testimonies described them being stripped naked and cuffed before being left alone with Chinese men, where they were subject to rape and torture such as electrocution.

Aside from medical interventions, women were forced to be fitted with IUDs or undergo sterilization. Food deprivation and beatings were also described as forms of punishment.

Who are the Testimonies From?

The testimonies come from Tursunay Ziawudun, an Uyghur woman who fled to the US after spending 9 months in the Xinjiang camps. She detailed her experience of being led to a “black room” where she was sexually assaulted.

“Perhaps this is the most unforgettable scar on me forever,”

Ziawudun said.

Gulzira Auelkhan, a Kazakh woman detained in the camp system for 18 months, and an unnamed former guard also gave their testimonies.

International Response

“These atrocities shock the conscience and must be met with serious consequences” quoted a spokesman from the US state department. Just recently, former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared that China has

‘committed genocide against Uighurs’.

Working in international efforts to hold China accountable, the UK “promised not to deepen ties with China until a full judicial inquiry has been made,” as called on by Member of Parliament Nus Ghani.

Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne also demanded transparency, saying the United Nations should be given “immediate” access to the region.
