WHAT IS THE G7 SUMMIT?
The G7 summit is an annual meeting between the world’s seven leading liberal democracies, namely Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. It is an opportunity for the leaders of the aforementioned nations to discuss solutions to key global challenges. Recent topics on the agenda include recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and intensifying climate change hazards.
KEY DETAILS OF THE EVENT
The United Kingdom is president for this year’s G7 summit. Representatives from India, South Korea and Australia have also been invited to take part as guests this year. The discussions for this year’s G7 summit mainly revolves around COVID-19 recovery.
COVID-19
The G7 summit has set a collective goal of ending the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022. In order to achieve this, an initiative will be kickstarted immediately to safely vaccinate as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time. World leaders have also promised one billion COVID vaccine doses for poorer nations.
ECONOMY
The G7 summit aims to revitalize economies by advancing recovery plans built on the $12 trillion of support put in place during the pandemic. The focus of said support will be shifted from crisis response to promoting future growth, helping to create jobs, invest in infrastructure and support people.
CLIMATE CHANGE
The summit also recognizes the importance of mitigating climate change, thus it is supporting the green revolution that creates employment opportunities while at the same time cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The goal is to limit the rise in global temperature by 1.5 degrees Celsius and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
