Trump Blocked by Multiple Social Media Platforms

In Response to Capitol Incident

--

Following the January 6 Capitol Incident, Trump has been banned from multiple social media platforms. Twitter announced a permanent ban and suspension of his account, while Facebook and Instagram have banned him indefinitely or until the transition of power is complete. Snapchat followed suit by freezing his account, while YouTube will now place a ‘strike’ on any video that spreads false election claims.

Why the Ban?

Social media companies stated that some of Trump’s social media posts violated their policies against the glorification and incitement of violence and the spread of election fraud claims. Trump tweeted,

“The 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me…will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!”

Twitter interpreted this as “further indication that President Trump does not plan to facilitate an orderly transition,” resulting in the ban. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said,

“[Facebook believes] the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great.”

Additionally, Google, Apple, Amazon and more have suspended social media app Parler, which is popular amongst Trump supporters, for inciting violence, even though Trump himself is not a user.
