Yoweri Museveni has won his sixth straight presidential term and was declared the winner of the Ugandan presidential elections on Jan 14. He won with a 59% vote to opposition leader Bobi Wine’s 35%.

Despite this election being dubbed as the most ‘cheating-free’ election in the history of Uganda by Moseveni, there were violent protests in the capital city of Kampala and outrage from the international community.

Re-election Campaign

After a violent re-election campaign with significant crackdowns on the opposition, a nationwide internet blackout and accusations of vote-tampering and manipulation, Museveni was declared president once again.

Wine has claimed the election was unfair and rigged and has since been placed under house arrest under charges of breaching pandemic movement restrictions.

Who is Bobi Wine?

A popular rapper-turned-politician, Wine faced a battle to run for presidency after withstanding several arrests.

He criticized Museveni throughout the campaign, making claims of corruption, mass unemployment and poor relations with neighbouring countries.

He has not been allowed to leave his home or have any visitors. He has also filed a case against Museveni in the International Criminal Court, citing human rights violations.
