Melissa, at 28, is eager to experiment and to learn. She does not have a 5-year plan and believes in taking one day at a time. What matters to her is to learn a maximum for every experience and to grow.
She remembers being an attentive student in secondary school, but that was not the case when she was in primary school. At that time, she had just come back to Mauritius from Australia where she was born.
She has always had a liking for numbers and imagined herself making a career in accounting. She studied accounting in SC and HSC. In her eagerness to learn, she did internships in many companies, working during her vacation in several accounting firms and events management company since the age of 16. By the time she reached the age of 21, she had already gathered a lot of working experience. She started working full time in an accounting firm before later moving to the accounting department of a company producing chemical products.
Over time, Melissa, however, started realizing that she was not so excited staying behind a computer screen all day long. She found that what she enjoys most is meeting people, talking to them over the phone, interacting and negotiating with them. This encouraged her to make a shift in her career orientation, and she decided to pursue her studies in management, where she finally felt in her element.
After completing her degree in management, Melissa shifted to the procurement department, and that gave her the possibility to meet suppliers and negotiate with them. She found that this represented the real heart of the company. Accounting was a stable job where you work on numbers and cash flow and made sure the figures tally at the end of the month. Procurement gave her the possibility to deal with suppliers from abroad as she had to bring machinery to Mauritius, which involved a lot of processes and represented a challenge for the whole team.
She had to deal with different departments within an organization and various types of personalities and learned a lot about people, about attitudes and about ways to react. From this, she learned a lot about herself and where she wanted to go in her career.
Since leaving college, Melissa has worked with only two companies. She is not someone who changes her job often and believes that what is essential is to have the right people around you and the right work environment. However, she insists that someone who has just started in his career should try a maximum of things because we never know what suits us best.
