XYO and RadMaps: Bringing Authenticity to San Diego Reviews

RadMaps delivers iconic, colorful, cartoon-esque maps of local towns & businesses, letting viewers know where they can grab a pizza, rent a surfboard, or even take a hot yoga class.

Along with printed posters, the maps have been published in some of San Diego County’s most notable publications, including Encinitas Magazine, Carlsbad Magazine and The Osider.

The magic of these maps is their authenticity. Each is a unique drawing, and each landmark is a hyper-local, kitschy way to let tourists and residents know that what they want — even at that very moment — is literally just around the corner.

The company is developing an innovative business review feature designed to guarantee authenticity, but in the age of reputation warfare, where businesses routinely savage other businesses via fake reviews, this goal is complicated. This is not even touching on the phenomenon of paid-for and fake positive reviews, where a just-okay French restaurant can sound like it recently won its third Michelin star — handily.

The problem is obvious: If RadMaps adds reviews to their interactive maps, how can the company know for sure when — and if — the person who praised or panned that dry cleaner or coffee shop actually went there?
