The dynamic and down-to-earth Dr. Pablo Paredes inspired and challenged Y-Labs Teen Business Accelerator Fellows to “focus on solving important problems” and to “bring your heart to CS” in the same unique and multi-dimensional manner that Dr. Parades tackles solving Persistent Health Issues for today’s stressed out world at Pervasive Well-Being Technology Lab at Stanford University’s Medical School.

Dr. Paredes runs the Pervasive Wellbeing Lab at The Stanford University Medical School. His work examines how the design and use of technology can be leveraged to better monitor and improve mental health and happiness and improve the mental health technology gap.

Dr. Pablo Paredes used his own life to lend lessons in Prompt Intervention Methodology to encourage the Y-Labs Fellows to “face obstacles, become uncomfortable” and “build resilience and optimism.” The emotional and mental muscles formed when teens practice resilience and optimism pay lifetime dividends.

Despite Dr. Paredes impressive credentials — he has a PhD in Computer Science from UC Berkeley, an Engineering MS & MBA from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and he is a Google Scholar, the culturally and globally diverse group of Y-Labs Business Fellows were thrilled to see that someone “so cool” had some of the same sports, music, social and time management issues in High School as they did. The Fellows loved that Dr. Paredes played bass guitar, toured in a band, and produced CD’s. In a rapid fire question and answer session, Dr. Pablo differentiated between “intelligence and intellectual curiosity” computer science and electrical engineering students often must choose between solving important problems or being comfortable and making money.

For Precision Health Improvement, Dr. Paredes stressed the role of teens’ creating a positive self-perception of being healthy and strong along with the individual attributes of what constitutes health for them. Plus, having a support system that helps you laugh! Laughter can be the best medicine! The Teen Business Accelerator Fellows found Dr. Paredes’s methodology of Prompt Intervention Therapy “totally awesome” and how simple mouse movement studies on devices to car’s that sense stress “rad.”
