On this year’s International Women’s Day, YALI Network Lagos supported by the U.S. Consulate organised an event for entrepreneurs most especially women. The event began with a welcome address by The Cultural Affairs Officer, Mr Kevin Krapf. He appreciated the guest panelists and everyone for coming. He spoke briefly on the importance of the day.

This was followed by a presentation by Kennedy Osagie and Temitope Olatimehin where they encouraged women to keep making an impact irrespective of their locations.

Then everyone watched a video on the story of a female Nigerian entrepreneur, Nike Ogunlesi, CEO of Ruff & Tumble. The video showcased her business, success and challenges peculiar to the Nigerian terrain.

This led to the panel session which was moderated by Ugochi Obidiegwu, the Team Lead of YALI Network Lagos. The panelists were Nelly Agbogu (@naijabrandchick), Oladoyin Taiwo (@profitwithdoyin), Tricia Ikponwonba (@triciabiz) and Oduwa Agboneni (@nenisautocare). It was an interesting and enlightening conversation.

Here Are 10 Things We Learned as Women Entrepreneurs

1) Sometimes it’s okay not to have or know the big picture. However, what is important is that wherever you find yourself, apply yourself diligently. The things you learn there will be useful in your future.

2) Your problem or challenge could lead to you creating a solution that will help you and others. Do not get weighed down by your problems instead think creatively of how to solve it. Be open to go out of your comfort zone and learn.

3) As a business owner, it is important to get business education. While going for a higher education is good, there are numerous ways one can get this knowledge at subsidized costs e.g. social media, thought leaders, online course platforms (Coursera, Udemy)

4) There is power in your mobile devices. Use your data to find ways to drive business to yourself. Different businesses require different social media platforms. Therefore, determine the one for you, focus and use it well

5) When working in male-dominated industries be bold, confident and focused. When you show you know what you are doing despite opposition, you will win them to yourself.

6) Women need to come together in one voice to press for progress. Collaboration and support of one other will help us achieve our goals

7) NGOs need to find a way to become sustainable. This can be done through identifying a problem, creating a solution that can be monetized and reinvesting that money into the foundation.

8) In business, always show the value you bring to the table. People might not trust you initially but when you consistently give value, you will win them over.

9) There might be times you will need to get a job or extra sources of income in order to fund your passion in the absence of external funding. Humble yourself and do the needful while growing your business.

10) In business it is important to identify your strengths and weaknesses. Outsource or delegate your weaknesses to enable you focus on your strengths for better effectiveness
