Yang Gang Wisdom #1
Not Left. Not Right. Forward.
Welcome to the first edition of Yang Gang Wisdom, the first of many summaries covering the demographics, opinions, and ideas of the Yang Gang.
Our first survey, “Who is the Yang Gang?” received over 200 responses and makes one thing clear, the Yang Gang is an inclusive and diverse bunch. Something we all expected, but at least now we are starting to get some data to back it up.
Please keep in mind that the results below will change over time as the Yang Gang grows and more people complete the survey. Also nearly everyone who completed the survey is on Twitter so results will skew that way.
Political Beliefs
We are a beautiful cross section of political beliefs that includes not only liberals, but also centrists and moderate conservatives as well as libertarians and many people who just wanted to be identified as not left or right, but forward. It’s more than a slogan, the Yang campaign truly has a sense of wanting to look past our differences and unite the country around our common humanity. This is where the Yang Gang really shines. Not Left. Not Right. FORWARD.
Interestingly, but perhaps unsurprisingly, not a single person who completed the survey identified as “very conservative.”
Age
The Yang Gang skews very young with the majority of us between 18 and 38. To me this says we need to do a better job at reaching older voters.
Race / Ethnicity
This is roughly a reflection of America’s ethnic composition as a whole with the most significant difference being a very high number of those identifying themselves as mixed race. Perhaps Yang’s Humanity First message appeals very strongly to those who have a multiracial background?
There is an underrepresentation of African-Americans / Blacks and Hispanics in the Yang Gang that we can probably do a better job of reaching out to.
State
As expected, most of the Yang Gang are from the largest states like California, New York, and Texas. However, not as you might expect there are more people that are from states that voted red or for Trump than blue or for Clinton in 2016. To me this is a great sign for when we make it to the General Election.
Education
The Yang Gang tends to be more educated than the general U.S. population, but not overwhelmingly so. We can do a better job reaching out to those who are not on Twitter and only have a high school diploma.
Most Appealing Yang Message
The Freedom Dividend, Yang’s flagship and most recognizable proposal, is also the favorite of the Yang Gang. The combined Humanity First and Not Left or Right its Forward messaging, which are both messages of unity comes in a close second to the Freedom Dividend. The Yang Gang clearly has two primary goals: give everyone $1000 a month and unite the country.
Occupation
We have a fairly wide range of people in many different occupations as well as a high number of students. I believe this reflects the general youth of the Yang Gang.
Contribution
Statistically, not the most interesting results, but taken individually there were some real gems in these answers!
#YangGangLove
One surprising find was how many of the respondents wrote down a response that I can only categorize as “Good Vibes”. Here are some of the “Good Vibes” answers:
“Being kind”
“Healing political divides through compassion and active listening”
“Authenticity”
“Civility”
“Emotional support “
“Empathy”
“Enthusiasm”
“Love”
“Positivity”
“Understanding”
🤣 Some of the funniest responses to what people would contribute to the Yang Gang were:
“Male Model”
“Convincing my dad to not vote for Trump”
“Give Andrew better haircuts!”
“My big mouth”
We all can contribute something and it’s important that we each do so in our own way. If you’re not sure how to get involved, the best way is to volunteer directly with the official Yang2020 campaign: https://www.yang2020.com/volunteer/
Future
The next surveys will ask for the Yang Gang’s opinion about the campaign so far and ideas for the future so we can get a picture of what the Yang Gang are thinking. I think combining all three things: current status and identity, feedback about the past, and ideas for the future will be crucial to unlocking the Wisdom of the Yang Gang.
Raw Responses
For clarity, I have edited some of the responses before publishing, but you can see the complete unedited responses and data here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10DqWun8yJWLtWmb1S49tLNcDK8nfVrGVFVD7js3Ph8s/edit?usp=sharing
I tried my best to keep the original intent of the answer and no answers were edited in order to manipulate the final results.
Want to Help?
Do you want to contribute to the Wisdom of the Yang Gang? Your experiences, ideas, and voice are very valuable and I believe may help Andrew Yang become the next President of the United States. The first step is to complete the “Who is the Yang Gang?” basic survey, which covers the results from above and will update the basic profile of who we are and how we grow. The more answers we get, the clearer the picture will be. If you allow and consent to it, we will also periodically e-mail you new results, questions, surveys, and developments from the Yang Gang Wisdom community.
Never miss a new survey or new result by subscribing to the Yang Gang Wisdom newsletter.
