Now that you have 700 followers, it’s time to take a step back and evaluate.

What do you hope to gain from having a lot of followers? What are your goals? What’s worked for you and what hasn’t? What can you improve on? Once you have those answers, you have to realize that 700 is a pivotal number for your career as a writer.

Here’s why —

  • Between 700 and 2,000 followers you’ll find radically different levels of skill. Some writers in this area write masterpieces, while others got lucky writing one viral piece about Elon Musk’s work ethic or some stupid shit like that. You need to differentiate yourself here. Stand out.
  • Even the most-followed people on Medium aren’t at unreachable numbers, yet. Many of the top earners sit around a few thousand followers.
  • Medium is maturing, but it’s still in its infancy. It hasn’t peaked. One day this will be the YouTube of blogging and you’re at the part where careers are being made.
  • Once you reach 700 and eventually head into the thousands, you have a better chance at getting contacted by Medium itself, or by other top writers. Both happened to me.
