I tried to tell you.

The events that are unfolding in Ukraine have thrust cryptocurrency, specifically Bitcoin, into the global spotlight. Bitcoin is the financial lynchpin of this war, as per these recent headlines —

  • The international hacker group “Anonymous” is offering Russian troops Bitcoin bounty to surrender their tanks
  • Ukraine has raised more than $54 million as Bitcoin donations pour in to support the war against Russia

So where does Ethereum play into all of this?

To put it bluntly, things aren’t looking good.

Ethereum is “centralized”

I used to work with a guy who bought into Bitcoin in 2013 and he would say “Ethereum is centralized; the only thing that isn’t is Bitcoin.”

This pissed me off.

“Fuck you!” I’d think, but not tell him since he was my boss.

Well — after this week, I believe he was right. The widely popular Ethereum digital wallet Metamask blocked users in Iran and Venezuala from using their app.

Users were able to retrieve their funds and move them to another wallet, but this event highlighted the fact that…
