From the promise of electric cars to the prospects of self-driving cars, technology seems to always have a new card every single day. The point we are trying to make here is this — that technology has become an integral part of our everyday lives.

Come to think of it, would you have had this same outlook about 20–21 years ago? Surely not. At that time, Amazon was still trying to make it out of the garage. Facebook, Twitter and the likes are not even in existence. Elon Musk’s Tesla? Still in its infancy. The likely exceptions would have been IBM, Microsoft, and a handful of others.

Recall the days when you had to go to the payphone to make a call? Or if you are lucky, you should still recall how cumbersome those land cable telephones could be. Those days are long gone now. The funny part was that you could not even see who you were talking to.

Fast forward to today. There are several apps that have been designed to enable chats, voice over internet calls, and video calls. Some specific apps like Zoom even make teleconferencing possible.

All thanks to technology, distance is no longer a barrier, and call costs are relatively affordable. We now engage in chats, voice and video calls as part of our daily routine.

Technology and Media

Media used to refer to ‘the Press’ alone — the television stations, radio stations and newspaper publishing houses, nothing else. Technology has added the dimension of “social” to traditional media.

We no longer have to stick to our televisions at fixed hours to get information. The age of social media has made it possible to get information in real-time.

And traditional media? Technology has globalised their operations. Most now operate on digital channels through which they reach global audiences.

Technology and Entertainment

Think of your favourite movies at the turn of the century. You had to spend a reasonable amount on accumulating Compact Discs just to see movies. Fast forward two decades and those stockpiles of discs are out of fashion in the age of Showmax and Netflix.

You get to see your favourite fashion and reality shows seamlessly. It’s even possible to split your screen and alternate between programmes.

This comes home more than ever.

Technology has shaped and continues to shape the way we work. We are gradually shifting from the 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. standard work time in cubicle office spaces.

Nowadays, workers are increasingly embracing virtual workspace (work from home). With collaboration tools like Trello and Click Up, supported with teleconferencing platforms, teams now work together from different locations.

COVID-19 and our New Reality

Preference for remote working has further increased with the global outbreak of COVID-19. The need to stay safe has meant that we spend longer time before our phones and laptop screens, collaborating with our fellow workers and getting jobs done.

UI/UX Design

UI/UI stands for User Interface and User Experience. UI/UX in simple terms means designing interfaces for human use. It is all about enhancing people’s online experiences by providing them with something simple and straightforward, either on their mobile devices or desktop.

To be an expert in this field you have to master the concepts of visuals, typography, colours and contrasts, wireframing, prototyping, personas, white space, icons and illustrations, and the likes.

Generally, the process of enhancing the online experiences of consumers is continuous but can be divided into four stages -

  • Research: which is all about understanding and identifying what people want, identifying their frustrations and goals, knowing how different people might use the product or service, and how they are likely to start and end their interaction (experience) with the product.
  • Brainstorming: This is about user flows and wireframing. Diagrams outlining the steps users might take, and the rough sketch of the user interface components that might make up the UI.
  • Implementation: this is about prototyping and backend and frontend development.
  • Prototyping. It is about creating and making working products.
