  1. How do these degree maps relate to cultivating a sense of belonging at KSU and among other communities?

At KSU everyone of us here, both faculty and students, are here to work towards a common goal. We are all here because we each possess that innate desire/drive to be “better.” As we progress in our studies, research, or goals, our sense of community and belonging grows stronger, our relationships and bonds with one another grow deeper, and we begin to feel as if our role here is meaningful. In a sense, feeling a sense of belonging is nothing more than a matter of perspective. One can choose to think, “I don’t belong here. I’m not good at math, science, or whatever. I’m not making any friends. I have nothing truly great to offer — I’m just an average student, trying to get by.” However, before any of us even started class at KSU, we all became part of the same community. Every-single one of us is here because we have the potential to be someone and to do something — from the very beginning, through our acceptance letters, job offers, groups, or communities, we are told that we belong here. While our individual careers paths and goals may differ, we are all here for the same purpose — to achieve a higher sense of learning.

  1. What campus resources will you use to help stay on track?

In pursuing my own individual goal of personal growth and desire to succeed, there are almost an unlimited amount of resources available, both on and off campus, I will utilize as I work towards that goal. One of the most important and overlooked resources, I believe, is each other. We are all here for the same purpose — not only will communicating with people in the same class, group, organization, or geography keep me in check, but it also provides a deeper sense of belonging in the community and cultivates deeper relationships with peers, that I believe, benefits both myself and others. Secondly, the faculty, professors, and advisors can provide an unparalleled service toward being successful in my college career. Not only do they have a handful more experience than I do, but they have also done this before. They know what to expect and what is expected. And, if they don’t know the answer to a particular question, I’m sure they know who does, and would be happy to point me in the right direction.

  1. What did you discover as a result of this exercise?

Through completing this exercise, I have not necessarily learned, but cultivated a deeper understanding of what is going to be required of me in order to get my degree. Before, I made a decision, this is what I’m going to do, and this is how I’m going to do it. And, I’ve done pretty well so far. However, through this exercise, I have been able to fill in some of the gaps I have missed, did not quite understand, or ones I did not even know where there. The degree map has provided me with a visual aid to help me to understand what is happening when, what to expect, and when to expect it. Although, based on my past experiences with life, things will definitely change and move around, I have a solid foundation and guideline for what’s to come. And, while things will change, problems arise, and challenges presented, I believe I will be adequately prepared.
