At SpeakX, an Edtech Startup, we are on a mission to revolutionize how children learn and speak in English. I’ve had the privilege of evolving from a Product Experience Researcher, where I understood user needs, to my current role as a Product Manager, focused on delivering what users need.

I’ll walk you through my latest project:- Why is it important to set the context for users when it comes to onboarding?

Hypothesis
Our hypothesis was straightforward: By enhancing the contextual understanding during onboarding, we expected to observe a positive impact on two crucial metrics - order creation and payment success. We believed that when users grasped the value and relevance of SpeakX (English Speaking App for Kids) right from the start, they would be more inclined to engage further, leading to increased order creation and higher payment success rates.

Why Contextual Onboarding over Generic:
Choosing contextual onboarding over generic was offering a tailored experience rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Here’s why:

  1. Avoiding Unnecessary Tutorials: Generic onboarding often involves sitting through tutorials and product tours that may not be relevant at the initial stage. For instance, explaining basic details about how our exercises perform might not be helpful during onboarding.
  2. Skipping to the Essentials: Contextual onboarding allows users to skip straight to the features they need. Instead of bombarding them with unnecessary information, we could directly communicate the value our app brings to users.
  3. Higher Conversion Rates: Our observations indicated that users who had a more targeted and relevant initial interaction with our platform showed a higher rate of conversion. This led us to believe that contextual onboarding could significantly contribute to a user’s understanding and engagement.
Onboarding First Screen Variations

To fine-tune our onboarding experience and put our hypothesis to the test, we started with an extensive series of A/B tests. Our goal was to pinpoint the most effective elements that would resonate with users and enhance their contextual understanding. Firstly, we played around with a new color palette, aligning it seamlessly with our brand guidelines. Additionally, we introduced our brand mascot, injecting a touch of familiarity and friendliness into the onboarding process. Furthermore, we explored diverse variations in content and designs, aiming to strike the perfect balance that would captivate our users and effectively communicate the value.

Data Analysis

The Results:

The impact of these changes on our user base was nothing short of transformative:

  1. Exercise Engagement Surge
    — Refined onboarding led to a remarkable 50% increase in exercise engagement.
  2. Impact on Orders Created
    — A/B tested variations in content and design resulted in a significant 2.76% increase in orders created.
  3. Impressive Payment Success Jump
    — A significant 24.07% rise in payments.

Conclusion:

My journey into product management at SpeakX has just begun, and I’m thrilled to share more tales of innovation and learning. Remember, setting the right context is key. Until next time, happy learning! 🚀✨
