More than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year

Food delivery or a cozy homemade dinner? Coffee-to-go or your favorite coffee on a balcony, breathing in the fresh air?

Plastic items are very convenient, right? Sometimes it’s much easier to get a plastic bag for your groceries, or order food delivery services that use a ton of plastic nowadays. We’ve all been there! But have you ever wondered where all these plastic items end up at?

Statistics show that 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans every year. All the values that make plastic so useful, like durability and resistance, also make it impossible for our oceans to cope with. Did you know that most plastic items never fully disappear? Yep, they just get smaller and smaller and much smaller! These pieces get so tiny that they become invisible to our eye. All this microplastic travels the waters and ends up on the islands in the South Pacific and the most remote reaches of the Arctic.

Plastic constitutes approximately 90 percent of all trash floating on the ocean’s surface. Really?

You can cut down the amount of plastic entering the ocean today! Choose multi-use fabric bags instead of polyethylene bags while shopping. Choose glass, or at least multi-use plastic plates and tableware when you throw a party next time. Choose plastic-free assets for your artwork! Showcase glass, wood, or metal alternatives in your projects. We will help you with that!

It can take anywhere from 500 years — never for plastic to biodegrade.

Do you know how long it takes plastic to dissolve in soil? Depending on the plastic formula, it can take no less than 450 years, and sometimes it goes up to 1000 years. Packaging created with PET and PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate) will never biodegrade. In addition, the liquid inside these bottles can include some dangerous chemicals. Is it a fair exchange? 5 minutes to use, 1000 years to dissolve. The majority of bottles even cannot be recycled. It makes us think before betting an extra bottle, right?

How to avoid such waste and decrease the global ecological damage made by plastic bottles? Choose glass, it’s 100% endlessly recyclable, and without loss in quality and purity. Choose to have a coffee at home or in a ceramic café cup. Take a minute to enjoy it without a rush. Get a canvas groceries bag, reusable coffee mug, and get a reusable water bottle.

Also, digital design assets are eco-friendly too. Upgrade your designs. A few clicks to upload, endless times to use, 0% landfill harm. Intrigued? You can easily find perfect eco-friendly packaging on Yellow Images!

We are now producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year, half of which is for single-use

What are 300 million tons? It is 338 Golden Gates Bridges, or almost 1,000 Empire State Buildings, or it is two New York Cities. Two! Maybe you can see the bigger picture now. These are the plastic items that people use only once. Logically, it should be stored somewhere, or recycled. Unfortunately, some of the plastic cannot be easily recycled, and some stay almost forever, untouched on dumps.

What can we do today? Use easily recyclable materials, and reuse products we already have. We can start today by using reusable coffee cups while working and digitally get some inspiration from recyclable materials.

We use 500 billion plastic cups & 16 billion disposable coffee cups every year.

Mmm…Freshly brewed coffee at your favorite coffee shop before a busy workday? Sounds great! Do you know that disposable coffee cups also contain plastic? Even though you diligently place your coffee cup into the trash can, it still adds up to the plastic pollution.

Coffee cups to-go are not made of 100% paper. Their inside is coated with a polyethylene layer that prevents cups from leaking. All the layers are fused so well together that they may never be separated again, meaning never to be recycled. And, since it is plastic, it never decomposes.

Did you know that 500 billion disposable cups are produced globally per year? That’s enough to wrap around the earth over 1300 times.

What we could do then? We can bring a reusable cup with us. It doesn’t only do good for the planet, but also keeps your coffee hot for longer and saves you some money. That’s right! Most coffee shops will give you a discount if you bring your own cup. Own a coffee shop and still don’t have that discount? You know where to start. Choose biodegradable cups, promote reusable cups by adding a discount and showcase eco-friendly digital assets in your ads.

One million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually from plastic in oceans

Have you ever thought about a plastic bag or a plastic straw journey that starts in a factory? Produced for single-use, they cause a lot of damage to the sea wildlife. However, how is it connected?

Plastic bags are very light and can easily fly from the trash. Produced for transportation convenience, they may cause animal deaths. Very light, very easy to make and distribute, they float to the sea, and cause severe damage to the sea life. For example, newborn turtles are extinct because of the trash on beaches. Very tiny newborn creatures have to go to the sea to continue their life as adults, but even a human footprint on sand becomes a huge mountain on their way. Plastic is even worse.

In addition, marine animals and birds eat plastic bags because they look like food. Animals cannot distinguish between jellyfish and a transparent plastic bag, and end up dying from intoxication, suffocation, or starvation.

According to studies, 35% of turtle deaths are caused by plastic bag consumption, and the proportion increasing rapidly. Sadly, some pelicans consume straws and plastic bags as well. Even home-grown animals are in danger of plastic digestion, some cats and dogs can play and consume plastic too, so we should be careful everywhere.

What can we do today? First of all, be careful with the trash bins. Please make sure that you close the lid tight, and some of the trash is not flying outside. Second, please prefer reusable canvas bags and reusable small fabric bags for vegetables and fruits. In addition, prefer drinks without plastic straws and utensils, you can easily find wooden or metal alternatives.

Looking for some canvas bags to start your eco-friendly journey with your designs? You know that Yellow Images has plenty of eco-friendly mockups in store.

80% of plastic bottles never get recycled.

Do you have a habit of drinking water every day? Pure water is great for our metabolism and digestion, we should stay hydrated, it’s better for our health. So, again you go to a shopping center and search for another plastic bottle.

Water is necessary for human body functioning, but we better rethink our behavior of buying plastic bottles of water. 80% of plastic bottles never get recycled. What does it mean? Bottles from a grocery store shelf stay in a landfill, and it takes 10 to 10,000 years to dissolve properly. In addition, approximately 8 million tons of plastic bottles get in the sea each year. It is almost 50 Sydney Opera Houses’ weights. Some studies reveal that in the year 2050 there will be more plastic than fishes in the sea.

What can we do today? Start with ourselves. We should get a water purifier and use reusable bottles made of glass or metal. Glass is 100% recyclable, metal would work well too. We can also avoid buying new plastic bottles, and if we end up buying them, we should put them safely into plastic recycling containers.

It takes a bit of effort to help our ecosystem. Together we can change the harsh numbers. Drink water wisely. Want to design a water bottle made of eco-friendly materials, such as glass and metal? You know where to find perfect mockups and assets for your work.

We might eat and drink microplastic every day.

Some people choose a seafood diet due to some personal reasons, and we tend to think it is a healthy choice. We prefer it to the meat protein, it saves the farmlands from starvation, and generally a better source of Omega-3, amino acids, and calcium. Do you know that sea animals, fish, and plankton consume more and more microplastic year by year?

While you think you do make a healthy choice, you might end up having plastic, because once plastic goes to the ocean, it absorbs dangerous chemicals, and by the time, marine life ingests small pieces of it, and it might directly go to your fresh plate of salmon. Scary?

There might be risks that we cannot fully understand right now. What can we do to prevent such events? Here is the checklist of things you can introduce to your daily life right away:

  1. While going grocery shopping, use a reusable canvas bag. It’s light, stylish, and convenient. You can make your own using our canvas bag mockups
  2. A reusable water bottle is also a way to go eco-friendly. Glass, metal, or combined material bottles you can easily find on our website as well
  3. You should bring your own coffee or a teacup. Ceramic, metal, glass, and many other materials for the reusable bottles would help prevent single-use plastic waste.
  4. Pack your food into reusable containers, and if you have leftovers — store them as well. Made of glass they are less dangerous while heated, and look so glossy and stylish.
  5. Use metal or wooden straws instead of plastic. Once you get the stylish utensils, it is hard to come back to plastic.
