4 Similarities between Entrepreneurship and Golf

JUAGOLF Trainees at a past training

Not too long ago, golf was viewed as a sport of the elite and the wealthy in the society. However, this has changed, and commoners appreciate the sport and a good number of them are already training. There are several avenues that you can use to learn the sport in Kenya. The Kenyan government is also on a mission to start training golf in schools. Sounds too good to be true but we keep our fingers crossed.

You may have noted that golf has a lot of similarities with entrepreneurship if you are a golfing enthusiast. An entrepreneur compares with a golfer in the following ways.

The task at hand is the most important

Entrepreneurship

Sometimes as an entrepreneur, you can err and fail to stick to the plan. Making a mistake is not the problem, but making this mistake your stumbling block is the issue. Focus on the task at hand because you cannot change your past, but you have a chance to define your future. Prioritize on the most important task when you are overwhelmed by duties.

Golf

In this sport, you take one shot at a time. The most important shot is the one that you are just about to take. Even though the past activities have influenced where you are now, the current shot is the one that determines your next move. Do not let the idea of past missed shots distract you from having your best. Remember that when you take your swing, and the ball leaves the clubface, what follows is beyond your control and you have to wait for the next shot.

All have work plans

An entrepreneur

We all have this big vision of how our business will grow. You must vet a business idea or else you find your venture suffering an early death. The plan should not be so rigid such that you cannot accommodate changes. An entrepreneur does not ignore the small things because that is what matters in the long run

A golfer

When an athlete lands on a golf course, he or she has a plan on how to play the game. This athlete sticks to the plan but still leaves some space for adjustments. However, situations changes and what was applicable yesterday might not apply today.

Mentoring is important

Entrepreneurship

More than half of the startups never see their 5th birthday. One of the major reasons is that they never have someone to guide them through their early stages. There are some mistakes that you can avoid as an entrepreneur if you have someone to guide you. A smart entrepreneur builds a support network and surrounds him/herself with people that are growth bound.

Golfing

Mentoring never ends on the golf course. Getting yourself a certified coach is the first step towards knowing the sport as an adult. Such an approach makes you build a solid foundation that will help you learn the sport without much strain. Pro golfers also need an extra pair of eyes because a simple adjustment can make a huge difference on the course.

You have to be honest with yourself

Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs make some crucial decisions without consulting anyone. You can decide to be unethical, overcharge or even break the law as long as no one notices. But as you do all this, remember that reputation is important. People do not just buy your products but your brand as well. You can lie to your customers but not to yourself.

Golfers

You may have heard people refer to golf as a ‘Gentleman’s Game’. A gentleman takes responsibility for his or her actions no matter the outcome. There will bad, good and excellent shots and it is all upon you. Keep track of your actions to determine whether you are making progress or just stalling.

Playing golf is one of the creative ways to make meaningful business connections. The calmness of a golf course makes it easy to hold conversations, unlike a soccer pitch that is noisy.
