Brandi Wagner describes how Sexy Star turned a glorious day into a regrettable one.

August 26th, 2017 was supposed to be one of AAA’s greatest days. It was the 25th edition of Triplemania under the AAA banner; their version of WrestleMania. Fans packed the Areana Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico, ready to see such contests as the Torneo Triplemania 25, Johnny Mundo versus Hijo del Fantasma and Texano, Jr., and Psycho Clown versus Dr. Wagner Jr. in the vaunted lucha de apuestas match.

Another match that was looked forward to was the four way match between Sexy Star, Ayako Hamada, Lady Shani and Rosemary for the Reina de Reinas Championship. AAA even offered the show for free to stream, via Twitch. And while most of the internet is talking about Triplemania XXV, it’s not all for the best of reasons.

During the four way match for the Reina de Reinas title, Sexy Star crossed the line of fantasy into real life, from play to punish by putting Rosemary (aka Courtney Rush) into an armbar submission and deliberately applied the maneuver in a way to cause pain and injury. Rosemary was in visible pain and discomfort, and tapped out rather quickly, ending the match.

Sexy Star however, refused to release the hold, and deliberately torqued Rosemary’s arm several more times before finally letting go. Clutching at her shoulder, the current GFW wrestler rolled from the ring, and Sexy herself bolted from the arena. The footage is disturbing. The fallout from this moment has been heard across the soundwaves of the internet ever since. Generally accepted and known facts are this:

  • Sometime during the match, Lady Shani and Sexy Star had begun shooting (working in a way where the moves do hurt and cause damage as opposed to minimizing damage, as is the general practice.) This is another shoot moment on the behalf of Sexy Star, even though the armbar was indeed to be the finish of the match.
  • Sexy Star left the arena after the match and Vampiro made her return in order to apologize to Rosemary. Sexy Star’s point of view on this situation is contradictory, first she stated it was an accident and she got caught up in the heat of the moment, then said it was all a work (part of the story).
  • Rosemary has since commented and stated that this is not the case, that Sexy Star took liberties with her and broke her trust by attempting to and injuring her on purpose. She also stated that the ‘apology’ from Sexy Star to her was halfhearted at best and full of excuses.

Many, many wrestlers, fans and promoters have spoken out against the once loved luchadora and shown their support for Rosemary, as well as emphasizing that wrestling is about trust and safety amongst its workers. Most have emphatically stated that someone who was willing to disregard the safety and trust of another co-worker in the ring had no place in the wrestling business.

I have to agree, one of the best parts about wrestling is that it is fantasy. It is not about really hurting your opponent. It’s meant to suspend reality and make you believe that it does. However when it gets too real, is when there are problems.

I used to be a fan of Sexy Star. I remember when I first saw her debut in Lucha Underground. Her character resonated with me; she made me believe she was a role model for all women. However with the realizations of this weekend, Sexy Star has broken my heart.

She broke not only the wrestler’s code of honor, and the trust of Rosemary and many other wrestlers, but the hearts of many fans like me. Those of us that looked up to her as a strong female role model now find ourselves in need of someone else to look up to. I can’t rightly look up to and glorify someone who is willing to hurt a brother or sister in arms. And honestly, I don’t think she cares about that. She doesn’t care that she broke my heart, or many other little girls’ hearts.

So, this will be my final mentioning of Sexy Star in any capacity as far as I can help it. I wish all the best to Rosemary and hope she has a speedy recovery. I hope that the people in charge of AAA, as well as Vampiro being in charge of talent, have learned from this awful situation.
