Your experience: MVPs and advertising?

Over the course of my career, I’ve given up on a number of MVPs that, a few months later, I wondered maybe just weren’t advertised enough, or correctly.
The “correctly” part is easy, once you’re aware of this issue; just treat the promotion strategy as another hypothesis to test.
But how do you know if you’ve advertised enough? Is the flatline in your metrics a sign that the hypothesis is flawed, or that the right customers just never heard about you?
