Capturing moments: Closing Ceremony — Washington, DC.

My YLAI experience has been one of tremendous growth, both personally and professionally as this was an opportunity to step outside the box and challenge myself like I had never done before. When YLAI announced the opportunity to become a City Hub Media Editor, I knew this was something I had to do even though I had never edited a video before. I thought to myself, “This is YLAI. Jump right in and take it on”. And so, I did just that and was selected for the Kansas City hub. As the City Hub Media Editor, I had the honor of documenting our YLAI experience in pictures and videos. This was an opportunity that would ensure that I engaged all the Fellows in my City Hub to ensure that our journey was captured. I had to be intentional with my engagement and networking because I didn’t feel as if it came naturally to me.

“This is YLAI. Jump right in and take it on”

The Kansas City Rebels were extremely encouraging, enthusiastic and allowed me to snap photos and capture videos of them at every single opportunity. They never turned my requests down. They never got annoyed. They were simply extraordinary and made the process effortless. Another exciting opportunity soon came up and this time I took on the task of doing YLAI’s Instagram Takeover. Admittedly, I love Instagram, and as such, I did not hesitate to volunteer. What I didn’t realize was that my reserved nature could translate in such a way that was appreciated and respected. Soon enough, I was more assertive and comfortable in my role and found a balance between my introversion and passion for photography. I conquered my awkwardness by focusing my energy on making memories that were worth a lifetime.

To my delight, I was contacted by YLAI and asked to do another Instagram Takeover — this time at the Closing Ceremony in Washington, DC. I was excited. I wanted to encapsulate the diversity and vibrancy of the Fellows. As someone who’s reserved, I felt well placed to capture the nuances that pulsed just below the surface. It’s really true that a picture is worth a thousand words. Since words escape me quite often, I could tell our YLAI story with images and videos that resonated and had impact.

Instagram Takeover — Washington DC

What is important to remember, is that there is room for all of us and the YLAI way is about creating opportunities and enhancing your skill-set, building your network, and creating change in your community.

By the end of it all, I learnt that success is what you make of it and growth comes in many different and unique ways. I’m still very much an introvert but there is space to be just that and to be effective nonetheless. What is important to remember, is that there is room for all of us and the YLAI way is about creating opportunities and enhancing your skill-set, building your network and creating change in your community. I shall cherish this opportunity and it’s lasting impact on my journey.

I surely would not claim to be a social media guru but what I am more confident in my capabilities and more comfortable in my skin.
