YLD Perspectives: Tom Gallacher

One of our ‘insiders’ will be giving us an insight into their career, and what it’s really like to work for YLD.

What is your name?
Tom Gallacher

What is your role at YLD?
Staff Engineer in London — an engineer in a leadership position, but focusing more on technology than delivery.

What did you do before joining YLD?
I graduated University with a degree in Computer Science and worked at a digital agency for a few years until I decided I wanted to experience the life of software contracting in London, before deciding to join YLD full-time.

Why did you decide to have a career in Software Engineering?
I have always had a keen interest in computers from a young age, and ended up by chance being accepted into a university course the let me experience all aspects of Computing, from networking, systems design, 3D game design and finally finding I enjoyed software development.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given in your career?
Surround yourself with people who you can learn from, but who you can also teach.

What are you most proud of in your career?
Seeing software engineers whom I have taught and mentored making advances in their careers.

What are you currently working on?
Delivering a Kubernetes cluster for a large publishing company, as well as trying to encourage good development practises by leading by example, and moving towards building automated continuous delivery pipelines for our infrastructure.

How does working atYLD differ to the companies you’ve worked at before?
The people, everyone from engineering, marketing through to finance, everyone has so much enthusiasm to learn and to become a better version of themselves.

What tech are you excited about at the moment?
Kubernetes!

What are you looking forward to in future with YLD?
Seeing the company grow and expanding into other areas!

What is your professional long term goal?
To continue 👨‍💻, but enable others to do so as well.
