We are closing down our YoCutie Web App.

First of all don’t panic. It’s only about the Web App and not our Android and iOS App. YoCutie is doing very good.

Why you ask?

Before you react and jump to conclusions, I can promise you that the Web App will return. I personally am a “web believer”, but there are some things that need to change.

Quick History Lesson

When I started my web development journey everything was “open”. Internet Explorer and Netscape were at war, fighting for user share. URL was a common term and it opened up the world for anybody who was able to boot-up a computer and use a web browser.

Years later, the so-called more interactive Web 2.0 was born. It opened up a modern approach for web developers to create interactive pages and fast access for web app users.

To follow the technology wave, there was something created that shifted the future of technology and the fate of Web 2.0. We all know the name of it, and many of us carry such devices in our pockets wherever we go. The iPhone emerged on the market and Android was soon to follow. It took the world by storm, shifting culture and technology forever.

Users, especially those not associated with businesses, started using mobile phones more than desktop PCs. People changed their habits to spend less time on a browser, even on mobile devices, and more time on apps. Which brings us to today. The age where everyone uses native apps.

YoCutie History

YoCutie started as an iOS App in 2013. The Android App soon followed suit. And yes, we also created a Web App. But it never got the traction that we had hoped to achieve. Why you ask? Simply, because 99% of our users were coming from the iOS App and Google Play Store. I mean, really, only 1% of users were accessing the Web App. To make matters worse, most of the the 1% were scammers and fake profiles. We definitely dislike these types of people the most, but that is another topic for a different day.

After much debate, we decided to keep the Web App, because I love the Web, the Desktop, and the beautiful Browser. Sometimes, you just have to follow your heart.

YoCutie Web Tech

Our YoCutie Web App was somehow developed isolated from the Apps. Which means, the Web App does not consume any of our API, which is a big mistake. It limits the ability to make changes for our API and the Web App. And that totally sucks.

YoCutie V2

We have started the development of YoCutie V2. While developing a new version, we need to make sure we do not break things on V1. Right now, it simply does not make sense to keep the Web App V1 alive and run the risk of breaking things. So it makes logical sense to close it down during V2 development.

However, be assured that we will bring it back for an awesome user experience you will love. Our users will be able to use it side-by-side with our native mobile apps. They will feel the benefits of using it on a large screen, with a real keyboard, along with use within a browser.

Open Web

Don’t get me wrong, I really like native apps. Native apps give us developers opportunity to create new ways of solving problems and to provide great user experience.

But should we really abandon the “open web” just for that? No way. One really BIG disadvantage of all this app mania is that, as developers, we are playing in a closed garden that is completely controlled by Apple and Google. Which is an additional topic I will be discussing soon.

This serves as an announcement that we have started working on YoCutie V2. As the process develops further, we will inform you about any upcoming changes and features.

In the meantime,

Bye Bye Web App. Cu soon.
